Perspectives Festival and the Future of the Saarspektakel

The discussion surrounding the Perspectives Festival and the future of the Saarspektakel was one of the central topics at the April 2026 Cultural Committee meeting. The Perspectives Festival, a major cultural highlight of the city, was presented in detail during the meeting. Its 2026 program will be characterized by a diverse range of artistic formats and international contributions.

In contrast, the Saarspektakel has clearly lost significance. The Cultural Committee recommended that the festival should no longer be held in the future. Instead, key elements such as the Blue Light Street, volunteer presentations, and water sports activities will be integrated into the Old Town Festival. The administration is currently reviewing which funds will become available due to the cancellation of the Saarspektakel and how these can be used for other cultural projects. The aim is to allocate more financial resources to the film festival Max Ophüls Preis and institutional cultural support.

At the same time, the administration recommends a strategic realignment of the Saarspektakel starting in 2029. The focus will be on river tourism along the Saar and its integration into the regional tourism strategy. A relaunch is planned no earlier than 2029, as ongoing construction projects and a lack of event spaces do not allow for an interim solution.

The City Library: A Central Cultural and Educational Hub

The Saarbrücken City Library is more than just a book lending institution – it is a central cultural and educational hub in the city. In April 2026, a review of the year 2025 was presented, followed by an outlook on the event program for May to August 2026.

The City Library offers a wide range of media and events that contribute to integration, education, and social participation. These include Alpha-Treffs, language cafés, guided tours in simple language, discussion groups for seniors, and low-threshold workshops on using mobile devices. Particularly noteworthy are book exchanges, upcycling events, and the Summer Reading Program that actively invites children into the world of books.

The City Library is also a meeting point for intercultural encounters. The BI-BUS, a mobile library, travels throughout the region and offers German-French programs. In the KULTs (Culture and Reading Meetings), film screenings, photography workshops, and other cultural activities take place.

Cultural Education in Primary Schools

Another focus of the Cultural Committee meeting was the review of school culture for 2025/2026. Cultural education in Saarbrücken's primary schools is actively supported by the Cultural Office. Offerings include visual arts, dance, theater, music, and storytelling.

The program included 30 projects at 9 primary schools, led by 12 cultural professionals. Particularly notable are projects such as "Hand Puppet Making & Improvisational Theater" or "Designing Comfort Animals & Improvisational Theater," which are both creative and pedagogically valuable. Teachers also benefit from the collaboration with extracurricular educational actors.

The budget planning for the school year 2026/2027 amounts to 68,000 euros, with each project costing up to 2,660 euros. Since 2025, the application process for new projects has been structured according to an evaluation scale that considers innovation, uniqueness, quality, and feasibility.

Outlook: Strengthening Community Through Culture

The decisions made in April 2026 show how important culture and community are to the identity and development of Saarbrücken. Through projects such as the City Library, the Perspectives Festival, and cultural education in primary schools, social cohesion is strengthened and cultural participation is promoted.

Although the Saarspektakel in its current form will come to an end, there remains hope that it can be revived in a new form as part of the regional tourism strategy. The future of Saarbrücken's cultural policy lies in flexibility, innovation, and the ability to adapt to new societal developments.
