Climate Protection and Sustainability in Saarbrücken – Focus on Decisions in January 2026

In January 2026, the state capital of Saarbrücken set new impulses in the implementation of its climate protection and sustainability strategy with concrete decisions and reports. The Committee for Environment, Climate and Sustainability was at the center, discussing noise protection measures, well locations, and the Voluntary Local Review (VLR) 2025. This blog article highlights the most important decisions, backgrounds, and implications.

Climate Protection and Sustainability in Saarbrücken – Decisions in January 2026

Saarbrücken is one of the pioneering cities in Germany in the fields of climate protection and sustainability. With its commitment to Agenda 2030 and the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2045, the state capital has set clear priorities. In January 2026, several relevant topics were in focus, including the Voluntary Local Review (VLR) 2025, climate adaptation measures, and noise protection projects. The Committee for Environment, Climate and Sustainability played a central role in these discussions.

The Voluntary Local Review 2025 – A Milestone on the Path to Sustainability

In January 2026, the Voluntary Local Review (VLR) 2025 was presented, a report that illustrates the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Saarbrücken. The VLR focused on six SDGs: Quality Education (SDG 4), Decent Work (SDG 8), Sustainable Cities (SDG 11), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Partnerships (SDG 17).

The report was created and funded with the support of the Service Office for Municipalities in the One World (SKEW). It is a key component within the framework of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) of the United Nations. The VLR not only communicates progress in sustainability policy but also highlights the challenges that still need to be overcome.

Another goal of the VLR is to strengthen Saarbrücken's role in the border region. To that end, a French translation of the report was commissioned. The VLR is also part of a broader strategy that includes a sustainability strategy with five action areas: exemplary administration, climate protection and energy efficiency, sustainable urban planning and mobility, social participation, and future-oriented economy.

Climate Adaptation Measures – From Fountains to Noise Protection

Another topic that was intensely discussed was climate adaptation measures. The focus was particularly on the use and possible reactivation of municipal fountains. The city is evaluating whether historical fountains such as the Oberdorfbrunnen or the Bruchbrunnen in St. Johann can be put back into operation. However, there are technical and financial challenges. Reactivating them is associated with high costs, as the fountains no longer function in most cases.

In addition, noise protection measures at the A620 on-ramp "Bismarckbrücke" in the direction of Mannheim were discussed. The aim is to improve noise protection along Hindenburgstraße and the street "An-der-Christkönig-Kirche." The current noise barrier is insufficient, so a gap closure is being examined. The administration has been tasked with clarifying responsibilities and establishing contact with the relevant authorities to implement the measures.

The Role of the Committee for Environment, Climate and Sustainability

The Committee for Environment, Climate and Sustainability is the central decision-making body in matters of climate protection and sustainability. In January 2026, it met publicly on 20.01.2026 and, in addition to the already mentioned topics, also addressed the care of the city's pigeon houses. Starting in January 2026, the city will take over cleaning, feeding, and egg removal, while the association "Stadttauben Saarbrücken e.V." remains responsible for animal care.

A new cooperation agreement between the city, the association, and the waste management company ASS Abfallwirtschaftsgesellschaft Saarbrücken GmbH is currently being prepared. The funds for implementing the concept are allocated in the 2026 budget. This measure shows how comprehensive Saarbrücken's sustainability policy is – not only in terms of environment and climate, but also in the treatment of animals and the use of urban resources.

Outlook and Challenges

The decisions made in January 2026 show that Saarbrücken is on the right path to achieving its climate protection and sustainability goals. With the VLR 2025, the city has set a milestone of national and international significance. At the same time, it remains a challenge to overcome the financial and technical obstacles in projects such as the reactivation of fountains or the implementation of noise protection measures.

The city must continue to rely on partnerships – not only within Germany, but also in the border region and on the international level. Initiatives such as the "Saarbrücker Kohle" or the competition "FAIRnünftige Unternehmen" show that sustainability also makes economic sense.

In the coming months, it will be important to concretely implement the measures mentioned in the reports and discussions and to transparently track progress. Agenda 2030 is a long marathon, and Saarbrücken has already demonstrated that it is up to the challenge.
