Culture: The Altstadtfest receives new impulses

The Cultural Committee has decided to no longer hold the Saarspektakel in the future. Instead, defining elements such as the Blue Light Street, water sports, and volunteer presentations will be integrated into the Altstadtfest. This step aims to strengthen cultural diversity while using resources more efficiently.

In addition, a review of the City Library's 2025 year was presented, which recorded 266,551 visits and 585,016 loans. The event program for the summer months is already set and includes, among others, the Day of Open Society and MINT workshops as part of the summer vacation program.

Integration: Commemoration and Participation

In several districts such as West, Dudweiler, and Halberg, the laying of Stolpersteine was decided for 2026/2027. The costs for the stones will be covered from the budget of the City Archives, without registering an additional need.

In addition, the Integration Council has elected a new deputy and prepared an action program for 2026. Furthermore, a senior participation concept for Rastpfuhl was pursued, which aims to include older people in the design of their living environment and expand existing senior services.

Environment: Heat planning and Heat Action Plan

The Committee for Environment, Climate, and Sustainability has acknowledged the action plan for municipal heat planning. 15 concrete measures, including energy efficiency, renewable energy, and heat network planning, were presented. The final decision is scheduled for the City Council on 23.06.2026.

In addition, the Heat Action Plan was presented in several committees. In district councils such as West, Mitte, and Halberg, the plan was acknowledged, without concrete financial decisions being made. The plan is part of the city's climate adaptation strategy.

Sport and Infrastructure: Renovation needs and Participation

The Committee for Sports and Public Institutions has acknowledged several proposals for the renovation of sports facilities. Thus, the Grün Weiss Matzenberg sports facility and the track in Dudweiler were identified as urgently needing renovation. The administration will be tasked with developing concrete proposals for restoration.

In addition, Saarbrücken will offer a supporting program for the Special Olympics from 15.06. to 20.06.2026. The city will use municipal sports facilities for 27 different sports, including football, athletics, and swimming.

Overall Development: Citizen Participation and Commemoration

April 2026 was characterized by increased citizen participation in cultural and social issues. The decisions on Stolperstein laying, cultural promotion, and climate adaptation show that the city of Saarbrücken is responding to the needs of the population. It also became clear that investments in sports and leisure infrastructure and the integration of senior citizens are a priority.
