Looking Back on February 2026: Verbandsgemeinde Hermeskeil in Motion
In February 2026, the Verbandsgemeinde Hermeskeil made important decisions – from investments in electromobility and school facilities to organizational realignments. An overview of the most important developments for residents.
Important Decisions for Everyday Life
What was important this month
- New electric citizen bus will be acquired – for environmentally friendly mobility in the town center.
- Beuren Elementary School will undergo comprehensive energy-efficient renovation – with a focus on electrical work.
- New hourly rates for fire department services were set – for greater transparency in fees.
- Christian Schirmer takes over as the new technical director – to ensure the maintenance of municipal infrastructure.
- Procurement value limits were adjusted – for greater transparency in municipal procurement.
Investments in Mobility and Education
The Verbandsgemeinde Hermeskeil made a clear decision in February to invest in the future. One of the central points was the acquisition of an electric citizen bus, which is funded by the municipal investment program KIPKI. This bus will support local mobility in the future, especially in the city center and during events. The contract was awarded to Autohaus Voll GmbH for an amount of 40,171.83 €.
In addition, a lease agreement for a new copier at Hermeskeil Elementary School was concluded. With a monthly payment of 253.47 € and a term of 60 months, the school will remain technologically up to date. This shows how much the Verbandsgemeinde supports digital equipment in education.
Energy-Efficient Renovation and Infrastructure
Another focus was the renovation of Beuren Elementary School. The mayor was tasked with awarding the electrical work to the most cost-effective bidder. With costs estimated at 70,000 to 80,000 €, a comprehensive renovation is planned. In addition, construction work for the maintenance staff's storage area was approved, with a total cost estimate of 51,095 €. These investments help ensure the longevity and safety of municipal infrastructure.
Organizational and Legal Adjustments
In the Verbandsgemeinderat, two important ordinance amendments were passed:
- The 5th amendment to the main ordinance was unanimously adopted to comply with the latest state legal requirements in the area of fire and disaster protection.
- The revised ordinance for fire department services was also unanimously passed. According to this, 45 € per hour will be charged for emergency services and 25 € per hour for training – a clear regulation that enhances transparency.
In addition, Christian Schirmer was appointed as the new technical director of the VG-Werke. He succeeds Mr. Jung, who will leave at the end of April 2026. Schirmer brings extensive experience in municipal infrastructure and will be responsible for the maintenance and development of urban facilities in the future.
Transparency in Procurement
Another milestone was the adjustment of procurement thresholds. The upper limit for contracts the mayor can award directly was increased from 15,000 € to 25,000 €. From 10,000 € onwards, a report to the Main and Finance Committee is required. This regulation aims to strengthen transparency and public oversight while simultaneously reducing bureaucratic hurdles.
Conclusion and Outlook
February 2026 in Hermeskeil was characterized by investments in the future, transparency in administration, and clear decisions for greater safety and sustainability. Municipal infrastructure is being further developed, educational institutions are being better equipped, and the administration is becoming more flexible – all steps that are crucial for the quality of life of residents.
In March, the focus will be on the implementation of the approved projects and the first reports on the renovation work. In addition, further procurement awards as part of the energy-efficient renovation are expected. The Verbandsgemeinde Hermeskeil is clearly moving toward a sustainable, transparent, and future-ready municipality.
