Traffic and Mobility in Wachtberg: Renovations, Speed Adjustments, and Parking Issues in March 2026
In March 2026, Wachtberg experienced significant developments in the area of traffic and mobility. Road construction, speed adjustments, and parking management were at the center of the local committee discussions.
Traffic Development in Wachtberg: Renovations, Markings, and Parking Management
In March 2026, the city of Wachtberg continued its efforts to improve traffic conditions. Numerous measures were planned or already implemented in the individual districts, with both successes and challenges emerging.
Road Construction and Renovations: Progress and Delays
One of the largest projects of the month was the comprehensive renovation of the K14 in Ließem. The first construction phase proceeded smoothly and is expected to be completed before Easter 2026. The second phase, which includes the town entrance at Lannesdorfer Straße, is planned for the school holidays, although the exact timing is still undetermined.
In contrast, there were delays in the local road renovation in Ließem. It became clear that the fiber optic expansion in autumn 2026 offers the optimal time to carry out the work. In addition, a shortage of staff in the administration contributed to the next measure not being able to start until at least 2–3 years later.
In Oberbachem, the renovation of Oberbachemer Straße was also a topic of discussion. The damage caused by the detour is to be repaired before the road is finally reopened. Financial support from the district is being sought to cover the costs.
Speed Adjustments and Markings
Another measure concerned the adjustment of the speed limit in the area of "Am Roggenacher" to 70 km/h. The goal is to increase safety while simultaneously improving traffic flow. In addition, road markings were implemented on Oberbachemer Straße.
The evaluation of additional edge markings between Ließem and Oberbachem was also on the agenda. Another proposal involved the installation of an information display at Marienstraße 6, offering guidance and information to road users. In addition, suggestions for marking additional parking spaces at the old school bus stop were considered.
Parking Management and Traffic Calming
In the area of parking management, there were discussions in several districts. In Oberbachem, the parking situation during the weekend of the amateur theater as well as the general parking situation on Sundays was the focus. In addition, the sidewalk conditions between Nieder- and Oberbachem and the speed limit at the Kürrighoven bus stop were discussed.
In Gimmersdorf, the establishment of a traffic-calmed area "Play Street" near the village hall was discussed. Here, the removal of hatched markings, the marking of parking areas, and the involvement of residents were central. In the long term, a paid parking management system in the old town center is planned, with residents receiving a free parking space.
Challenges and Perspectives
Although progress was made in some areas, challenges remain. Staff shortages, financial constraints, and long-term planning are causing delays. In addition, communication with citizens and the transparency of measures need to be improved.
Future perspectives include the expansion of the road and path concept, the stronger use of sustainable materials such as quiet asphalt, and the better integration of mobility concepts into urban planning.
