Sports in Solingen: Infrastructure, Safety, and Future Visions

In February 2026, Solingen saw significant decisions and developments in the field of sports. From the modernization of the Jahnkampfbahn to the safety planning for sports facilities — the new city department "Sports and Leisure" is focusing on innovation and sustainability.

Sports Infrastructure and Renovation Projects

In February 2026, Solingen is placing greater emphasis on investments in modern sports facilities. The Jahnkampfbahn, a central venue for regional league football, is at the forefront. In addition to reviewing the WDFV statutes and assessing safety capacity (currently 4,957 people), extensive renovation measures are planned. These include the renewal of the natural grass pitch, the conversion of lighting to energy-efficient LED technology (saving up to 71%), and co-funding the construction of stands. These measures demonstrate the city's clear commitment to designing sports infrastructure not only functionally, but also in an environmentally friendly way.

In addition, the sports hall at the Theodor-Heuss-Real-Schule will be demolished and rebuilt. This is another step to improve the quality of school sports offerings in Solingen.

Safety Concepts and Security Services

Safety at sports events holds a high priority in Solingen. The security service is required to conduct entrance checks, keep emergency routes clear, and report security incidents to the police, fire department, and emergency services. Particularly for "games with increased risk," stricter measures apply: alcohol ban, ticket limit, and increased security presence. In addition, clubs must present a clearly visible stadium order and use stadium announcers for emergency announcements.

These safety requirements are not only relevant for the Jahnkampfbahn, but also for other sports facilities. The city is committed to conducting construction supervision during renovations and coordinating safety concepts with the monument authority.

School Yard Usage and New Usage Regulations

The sports committee meeting also discussed a new version of the School Yard Usage Ordinance. The new regulation allows additional sports and leisure activities outside of school hours — under clear guidelines. Ball games with soft balls, roller skating, and cycling are permitted. In contrast, vehicles with batteries or engines, alcohol, drugs, and animals are prohibited.

This regulation aims to promote the sustainable use of schoolyards while ensuring the protection of the facilities. In addition, the city will also be involved in the implementation to avoid confusion and misunderstandings.

Future Visions: NRW Sports Billion and Funding Projects

Another focus was the NRW Sports Billion, a federal funding program with a volume of 7.5 billion euros. Solingen has already submitted two projects: a self-sufficient swimming pool at Weyersberg and a therapy pool at the Familienbad Vogelsang. Both projects aim to strengthen swimming sports and rehabilitation services in the city.

The municipal finance office is currently reviewing the funding of the own share. With 3,600 submitted projects, the program is heavily oversubscribed, underlining the importance of the applications from Solingen. The bathing company and the sports association are involved in the application processes to maximize the chances of funding.

Outlook: Sports in Solingen 2026 and Beyond

The city of Solingen is ambitious in further developing its sports offerings. In addition to the modernization of existing facilities and the assurance of safety standards, the future of sports facilities is also being planned. The new city department "Sports and Leisure" is a milestone in this development. It is intended not only to simplify administration, but also to strengthen cooperation with clubs and partners.

2026 will already see numerous events — from the Hallenmaster football tournament to the planned swimming competitions. The city is relying on a wide range of sports offerings that are accessible and inclusive for all population groups.
