Economic Development in Siegen 2026: Budget, Parking Management and City Festivals in Focus
In March 2026, Siegen made important decisions in the field of economic development. In addition to the 2026 budget planning, the parking management concept was intensively discussed. Furthermore, applications for car-free Sundays were submitted for the city festivals. The blog provides a comprehensive overview of the political decisions, background information, and implications.
Economic Development in Siegen: 2026 Budget Planning
The 2026 draft budget for the departments of Economic Development, City Halls, and Tourism reflects the central challenges that the city of Siegen faces in the economic sector. Economic development includes, among other things, the acquisition of new businesses, business support, and project development, particularly in the areas of e-mobility and broadband expansion.
The 2026 budget plan includes a deficit of approximately 806,842 euros. This deficit is mainly due to high personnel costs (597,442 euros) and investments in infrastructure, such as the charging station infrastructure for electric mobility. The city of Siegen also relies on funding from the state and the federal government to finance investments in fiber-optic network expansion and urban quality improvements.
Another central project is "Future City Center NRW – Siegen," which is supported by investments in the creation of city center qualities and the expansion of the fiber-optic network. In addition, a center budget of 30,000 euros is planned to make the city center more attractive.
Parking Management: Costs, Revenues, and Digital Alternatives
Parking management in the Siegen city center was another central topic of the March session. Looking at the cost and revenue planning, it becomes clear that the city of Siegen is relying on a clear strategy. The expected annual revenues from parking management amount to approximately 750,000 euros. In contrast, the annual total costs for parking meters and parking management amount to about 100,333.45 euros.
The administration proposes a new variant (Variant 2) with uniform parking regulations and time-limited parking. The goal is a uniform, easy-to-understand parking concept with clear signage. In some streets, parking spaces will no longer be managed but can only be used for a limited time.
Another focus is the reduction of parking meters through the introduction of a parking app. In Variant 2, the number of parking meters could be reduced to 21, thus reducing purchase costs to 154,000 euros. The app is designed as a forward-looking solution and could save costs in the long term and optimize parking behavior.
Car-Free Sundays: City Festival and Citizens' Festival as Economic Incentives
At the end of the March session, car-free Sundays for the City Festival and Citizens' Festival were in focus. The Siegen City Festival 2026 is planned with a visitor potential of up to 100,000 visitors per day and will be held on 30.08.2026 with a car-free Sunday. The goal is to increase foot traffic in the city center and strengthen the local retail sector.
The Citizens' Festival in Geisweid on 11.10.2026 will also include a car-free Sunday. The event is organized by local associations and organizations and aims to strengthen the identification of citizens with their city. The support from the Chamber of Commerce of Südwestfalen and the economic development office shows that the city of Siegen is deliberately strengthening local retail.
At the same time, there are also concerns, particularly from the union ver.di, which wants to protect the right to rest. The balancing act between economic benefits and social protection remains a current topic in the discussion about car-free Sundays.
Outlook: Economic Development in Siegen 2026
The decisions in March 2026 show that the city of Siegen is investing deliberately in the future. With the 2026 budget planning, the modernization of the city halls, and the creation of a modern parking concept, Siegen is betting on long-term competitiveness and attractiveness. The support of major events such as the City Festival and the Citizens' Festival also shows that the city actively stimulates the economy and strengthens the cultural offer.
The challenges are great, particularly against the background of deficits in the economic development budget and the digitization of the parking concept. But with clear strategies, clear goals, and the support of economic associations and local trade, Siegen could also demonstrate strong economic development in 2026.
