Housing Policy and Social Issues in Siegen: Integration, Funding, and Challenges
The city of Siegen is actively addressing issues such as migration, integration, and social participation. In April 2026, significant steps were taken in social and housing policy – from the promotion of intercultural projects to the funding of senior initiatives. This blog post analyzes the current developments.
Integration and Intercultural Projects in Siegen
The city of Siegen has intensified its support for intercultural projects in April 2026. Within the framework of the Small Business Orientation 2026 (MSO2026) program, a total of €11,752.50 was granted to seven projects, with one project being rejected. The projects range from an International Children's Festival and an Intercultural Music Meeting to an Africa Day and an Interreligious Christmas Celebration. The goal is to reduce prejudice, combat racism, and strengthen intercultural dialogue.
The jury made its decisions on April 14, 2026 at the Weidenau City Hall. Jury members evaluated the projects according to funding guidelines, with the project organizers – including the Atatürkverein Siegerland e.V., the Kurdische Gemeinde Siegen e.V., and the Africa Day Association – playing a central role.
Funding and Budget Adjustments
The financial structure of the projects was the subject of intense discussions. The original funding was increased from €4,600 to €8,000 in order to finance more projects. In total, €13,652.50 was applied for, with the city ultimately approving €10,992. This shows that many applications exceeded the budget, resulting in a reduction.
Another issue is the budget overrun, as €21,897.50 was requested beyond the available budget. The city has clear guidelines for the use of funds: projects must be implemented by registered associations, and there must be no double funding from other municipal sources. In addition, proof of use must be submitted within six weeks after the project ends.
Social Inclusion and Support for Vulnerable Groups
In addition to funding intercultural projects, social issues such as poverty reduction and support for refugees were also in focus. The Committee for Social Affairs, Families, and Seniors discussed the current situation of asylum seekers and refugees in Siegen – particularly with regard to accommodation, care, and healthcare.
A particularly sensitive issue was the question of electricity disconnections, raised by the SPD faction. According to the city administration, no concrete figures are available, as E.ON has not responded to inquiries. Nevertheless, the city is relying on preventive measures such as tenant counseling, advice on electricity and gas disconnections, and the involvement of the youth office when the well-being of children is at risk.
Future Perspectives and Challenges
The current funding of intercultural projects and the support for socially vulnerable groups show that Siegen is actively committed to an inclusive urban society. Nevertheless, challenges remain – particularly in budget planning and financing.
The city will continue to evaluate and adjust its projects in the coming months. It will be particularly important to create long-term stable funding structures in order to continue promoting projects and reducing social inequality in the future. In addition, stronger cooperation with regional organizations and associations is necessary to strengthen diversity in Siegen and ensure social inclusion at the same time.
