Economic Development in the Rhein-Sieg District: Collaborations, Projects and Impulses in March 2026

In March 2026, the Rhein-Sieg District set new impulses in economic development through a wide range of decisions, collaborations and projects. The focus was on strengthening regional industry, expanding inter-municipal cooperation and promoting innovative tourism and housing policy projects.

Collaborations as the Key to Regional Economic Development

In recent months, the Rhein-Sieg District has intensively focused on strengthening its economic foundations. In March 2026, collaborations were particularly central. The regional working group :rak, consisting of the federal city of Bonn, the Rhein-Sieg District, the district of Ahrweiler and the district of Neuwied, was placed on a broader, more structured basis. With the inclusion of the district of Neuwied as an equal partner, the collaboration was significantly expanded. The goal is to develop an effective governance structure across state borders that sustainably strengthens the regional economy and quality of life.

The financing of the :rak collaboration is now based on a newly defined key: 40% from the Rhein-Sieg District, and 20% each from Bonn, Ahrweiler and Neuwied. This creates legal clarity and establishes a sustainable financial basis for the collaboration. The cooperation agreement, which is retroactively effective from 01.01.2026, sets precise regulations regarding financing, the use of collaboration results and the organization of cooperation.

Economic Impulses through Events and Initiatives

In March 2026, the work of the Committee for Economy and Tourism was also intensified. A central motion by the SPD district council faction called for the preservation of the ZF site in Eitorf and the strengthening of conditions for industrial value creation. The motion was unanimously approved and led to the invitation of representatives from IG Metall, the works council, the company management and the IHK to the next meeting.

In addition, the Rhein-Sieg District set impulses in the startup and founder scene. With the "Startup Week Bonn/Rhein-Sieg" from July 13 to 17, 2026, the district plans to welcome more than 2,000 visitors and 100 startups. Furthermore, since April 2025, the district has supported a founding stipend.NRW of 1,200 euros per month, which has now been expanded with a new component called "Diversity+". These measures demonstrate how the Rhein-Sieg District actively strengthens the culture of entrepreneurship and creates new jobs.

Tourism and Housing: Future-Oriented Projects in Focus

In the tourism sector, the Rhein-Sieg District set several highlights. The project "ERLEBNIS.WISSEN.WASSER" aims to strengthen the tourist location through digital offerings such as augmented reality and sustainable product development. With an applied for funding of 320,000 euros and a self-contribution of 80,000 euros, the project is planned for 36 months. Likewise, the "Water Castle Route" is being further developed as an EFRE project to become a sustainable thematic cycle route.

In the housing sector, the district focused on support and investments. In 2025, 44.1 million euros in funds from North Rhine-Westphalia were approved to support 185 housing units. For 2026, a budget of 44.1 million euros has been approved, with funding applications totaling 150 million euros already submitted. With these funds, the Rhein-Sieg District will actively respond to the housing market and address the urgent need for new housing.

Conclusion: Stability through Structure, Impulses through Innovation

In March 2026, the Rhein-Sieg District has shown itself to be structured and innovative in economic development. With the expansion of the :rak collaboration, the strengthening of regional industry and the promotion of tourism and housing, the district is setting long-term impulses. The decisions show that the region not only relies on tradition but also actively invests in the future. In the coming months, the results of these measures will be particularly scrutinized – and they could establish the Rhein-Sieg District as one of the most economically dynamic regions in North Rhine-Westphalia.
