Traffic and Mobility in Focus – April 2026
In April 2026, topics such as the Nordbrücke, cycling networks, and green traffic planning in the Rhein-Sieg district were in the spotlight. Learn what has changed in the region in our monthly review.
Traffic and Mobility – What Was Important This Month
- Planning and Transport Committee meets: The joint session with Bonn on the Nordbrücke took place on April 15.
- Nordbrücke A 565 in focus: The Autobahn GmbH provided an update on the current status – a replacement is being planned.
- Green Party motions for more climate protection: A truck driving ban on the Nordbrücke and faster implementation are being demanded.
- Cycling becomes concrete: The commuter route from Bornheim to Alfter and Bonn is set to become continuous in the coming years.
Nordbrücke A 565 – Planning Gains Momentum
The Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke, also known as the Nordbrücke, remains a central issue in regional traffic planning. At the joint session of the Rhein-Sieg district's Transport Committee and the federal city of Bonn on April 15, the latest developments were discussed. The Autobahn GmbH presented its plans, but a final decision on the bridge variant was not made.
The Greens submitted two motions to increase pressure: One calls for a truck driving ban on the Nordbrücke to reduce environmental stress, and the other demands an acceleration of the replacement construction. Additionally, the early involvement of residents is being requested – a point that has often been critically observed in the past.
Cycling: From Idea to Implementation
Cycling is gaining increasing importance in the region. Another Greens motion called for the swift completion of the cycling commuter route from Bornheim to Alfter to Bonn, which currently has gaps. The goal is to create a continuous connection for commuters that can serve as an alternative to the car.
In addition, the administration has been tasked with examining the feasibility of the ADFC's proposed "Velorouten" network and integrating it into the existing cycling network (DS 230820). Planning and implementation funds have already been budgeted for the 2027/2028 twin budget. This shows: The region is investing in sustainable mobility.
Municipal Cooperation – Opportunity and Challenge
The joint session with the federal city of Bonn demonstrated how important cooperation between municipalities is. Especially for infrastructure projects such as the Nordbrücke or cycling networks, success often depends on coordination. At the same time, the motions from the Greens and CDU show that there is still room for more transparency and public participation in the communication processes.
Conclusion and Outlook
April 2026 was marked by concrete steps toward climate-friendly mobility and better traffic infrastructure. Whether it's the Nordbrücke or cycling – the Rhein-Sieg district is relying on planning security and sustainability. What remains is the question of how quickly these projects can be implemented. With the 2027/2028 twin budget, the first concrete implementation plans will be available – and residents should not only be users, but also co-creators in the process.
