Economic Development in Niederkrüchten – Status and Perspectives in March 2026
In March 2026, the topic of economic promotion, digitalization, and tourism were at the center of attention in the municipality of Niederkrüchten. The Committee for Economy and Digital Affairs analyzed current developments and discussed future measures.
Economic Dynamics in Niederkrüchten: Figures, Initiatives, and Challenges
In March 2026, the municipality of Niederkrüchten was actively engaged in examining its economic development. The Committee for Economy and Digital Affairs analyzed both quantitative and qualitative aspects. The discussions show that Niederkrüchten is on a good path, but challenges such as the lack of commercial land and structural problems in tourism remain.
Business Development: Growth and Bottlenecks
In 2025, Niederkrüchten reported an increase of 151 new businesses, bringing the total number of registered businesses to 1,193. Compared to the previous year, this is a significant rise. At the same time, the municipal business tax revenue decreased slightly from 6.69 million euros (2024) to 6.59 million euros (2025), indicating structural changes in the economy.
The cancellations and relocations of 93 businesses demonstrate that the municipality is facing structural challenges. Main reasons include a lack of expansion opportunities, age-related factors, and a lack of succession prospects. The economic development office is attempting to address these issues by facilitating commercial real estate and cooperating with entrepreneurs. However, free commercial land is scarce within the municipality. The Elmpt Business Park and the Javelin Park are considered key locations for the future, with the Javelin Park offering GI-areas (municipal industrial areas).
Digitalization: Progress and Challenges
Digitalization is a central element in the economic and administrative development plan. The municipality is a member of the Kommunales Rechenzentrum Niederrhein (KRZN) and uses its IT services. In total, around 100 workstations in the municipality are connected to the KRZN, and 16 virtual servers ensure the technical infrastructure.
Under the Online Access Act (OZG), 75 services have already been digitized, including dog registration, registration certificates, and digital forms for subsidies. Implementing the OZG remains an ongoing task, as many services depend on interfaces with external specialist processes.
Another milestone is the introduction of the Kita Plus App and the Bürgerkoffer, which has been in use for two weeks. Such initiatives contribute to the digitalization of public services and strengthen citizens' trust in the local administration.
Tourism: Decline in Overnight Stays and New Perspectives
The tourism industry is an important economic sector in Niederkrüchten. However, a decline in overnight stays is evident: 19,571 overnight stays up to November 2025 (excluding December) compared to 20,242 in the previous year. In 2019, before the pandemic, the numbers were still at 24,468. The Hotel Lenhsen with 25 beds has been removed from the statistics since the end of 2022, and vacation apartments or guesthouses are not taken into account.
Despite the decline, tourism in Niederkrüchten is not underestimated. Day trips along the Niederrhein remain popular, and there are discussions on how to develop alternative indicators for tourist activities. A new project is the establishment of a rental station for the NiederrheinRad at the Campinglatz Graskamp starting in April 2026, which could provide new impulses for the tourism offerings.
Outlook: Growth through Innovation and Cooperation
The future of economic development in Niederkrüchten strongly depends on the utilization of existing potentials. The Elmpt Business Park and the Javelin Park offer areas that can be used for future projects. At the same time, digitalization is a decisive growth factor that increases the efficiency of the administration and the attractiveness of the municipality.
Cooperations with regional partners, a stronger integration of SMEs, and a better use of tourism offerings can help further promote economic dynamics. The municipality is on the right track – now it is time to take the right steps in the right direction.
