Education Policy in Niederkrüchten: From the Library to the Schools

In April 2026, Niederkrüchten focused on a range of educational policy issues – from child care to the implementation of the right to full-day support and the future of student transportation. An overview of the most important decisions and developments.

Education Policy in Niederkrüchten: From the Library to the Schools

In the municipality of Niederkrüchten, education holds a high priority, reflected in the community's active engagement with educational policy matters. In April 2026, particular attention was given to child care planning, the implementation of the right to full-day support, and the future of student transportation. The municipality is actively working to ensure a high-quality and inclusive educational landscape for both the youngest and older children in the community.

The Municipal Library as a Central Educational and Meeting Place

The public municipal library in Niederkrüchten, which has existed since 2009, is a multifunctional hub for education, culture, and community interaction. It is jointly operated with the library in Schwalmtal under an inter-municipal agreement. Since 2023, Dipl.-Bibliothekarin (Diploma Librarian) Frau Otten has been leading the institution, which is supported by a combination of full-time, part-time, and volunteer staff.

In April 2026, a report on the operation and offerings of the library was presented. Although the exact financial implications were not fully detailed, it is clear that the library plays a central role in the educational landscape – not only through media offerings but also through events and educational initiatives for all age groups.

Child Care: Planning and Expansion in Focus

The municipality of Niederkrüchten has committed to regularly assessing the demand for early childhood education and care facilities. In April 2026, the updated needs assessment plan for the kindergarten year 2026/2027 was presented. Overall, 176 places are available for children under the age of three, with full coverage for children aged 0–1 and 1–2 years. However, a shortage of 13 places remains for children aged 3 to school entry in the Niederkrüchten social area.

The opening of the new child care facility on Kantstraße in Alt-Niederkrüchten largely marks the completion of the expansion plan for the coming years. Nevertheless, the task remains to expand child care offerings in future new housing developments. The municipality has already initiated planning steps to advance the expansion of child care centers.

Full-Day Support: Implementation and Challenges

On 1 August 2026, the legal entitlement to full-day support for children in the primary school sector will come into effect. In Niederkrüchten, both elementary schools are prepared to implement this right. For the school year 2026/2027, a minimum need for care of 80% is assumed, and the April 2026 registration figures show that the number of care places is sufficient.

The implementation is carried out through the "Open Full-Day Support" (OGS) and supplementary offers such as "School from Eight to One". Overall, measures such as the equipping of care rooms and structural extensions have been implemented within a support program. However, a care room is still missing at the GGS Elmpt, which is to be created in the group room of the Bürgerhaus Elmpt. This shows that even with good planning, improvisation is often necessary to meet all needs.

Student Transportation: Cost Reduction and Change of Ticket Model

Another focus of the April meeting was student transportation. The municipality has decided to terminate the contract with the SchokoTicket as of 30 April 2026 and instead use the Deutschlandticket Schule. This ticket costs 63 euros per month, with parents contributing 14 euros for the first child and 7 euros for the second child. The difference is reimbursed monthly.

This change has financial implications: The municipality saves approximately 27,000 euros per school year 2026/2027 compared to continuing the old contract. At the same time, eligible students must order the ticket themselves from the new school year onwards. However, the responsibility for verifying eligibility remains with the municipality.

Outlook: Stability and Further Development

Currently, education policy in Niederkrüchten is based on a solid foundation. The municipality has clearly committed to a future-oriented educational strategy by ensuring child care places, implementing the right to full-day support, and modernizing libraries. At the same time, it becomes evident that flexibility and rapid reactions are often necessary in practice – whether in space planning or in adapting financial models.

In the future, it will depend on whether the municipality can continue to develop its structures despite growing demand and spatial constraints. The current expansion plans for child care centers and the use of existing resources such as the Bürgerhaus Elmpt are first steps in the right direction.
