Mobility in Neuss: Focus on Infrastructure, Safety, and Traffic Policy in February 2026

In February 2026, the focus in Neuss was on the safety and accessibility of the transportation infrastructure. Numerous projects were approved, and political motions were discussed that could sustainably influence the daily lives of pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users.

Mobility Development in Neuss: Infrastructure, Safety, and Political Initiatives

In February 2026, the city of Neuss focused intensively on the future of mobility. In the Committee for Mobility and Infrastructure, key measures were discussed and decided that aim to optimize traffic flow, increase safety, and improve accessibility. At the same time, political initiatives from various factions revealed different priorities and target groups.

Infrastructure Measures for Greater Safety and Accessibility

One of the central topics of the meeting was the renovation of existing traffic facilities. It was decided to renovate and make the pedestrian crossing on Bahnhofstraße at number 21 accessible for people with mobility impairments. This is part of a city-wide strategy to sustainably improve accessibility in public spaces, especially for those with limited mobility.

In addition, the bus stop on Bonner Straße, Werresweg was approved for an accessible renovation. These measures follow the goal of making public transport more accessible to all residents. Another project was the establishment of a cycling crossing in the Lanzerather Straße, which should further promote cycling in the city.

The extension of the sidewalk at Röttgen and the redesign of the Konradstraße and Gagelweg following pipeline work complement these measures to improve the safety and functionality of the traffic infrastructure.

Political Initiatives: Greens, AfD, and SPD in Dialogue

The motions by BÜNDNIS 90 / DIE GRÜNEN showed a strong focus on sustainable mobility. The pilot project NEmo Shuttle, an autonomous local transport system, was discussed, and a report on the renovation of the railway crossing at Büdericher Straße was requested. The faction also called for an investment plan for the "Hierarchical Cycling Network," indicating a long-term planning and expansion of cycling infrastructure.

In addition, specific measures were demanded for the safety of bus stops and the creation of bicycle parking facilities. The motion to investigate a neighborhood bike garage underlines the desire for greater safety and practical solutions for cyclists in the city area.

On the other hand, the AfD faction advocated for the closure of a traffic lane on the Zollstraße to prioritize public transport. In contrast, the SPD faction demanded a reduction of loading zone parking spaces in the city center to optimize the parking management concept.

Budget Planning and Monitoring of Measures

The 2026 budget for the field of traffic affairs was presented. The draft budget foresees an increase in personnel costs for the supervision of stationary traffic from 1.3 million euros to 1.9 million euros. In addition, income from resident parking permits has been shifted to the traffic management area, indicating a stronger coordination and planning approach.

Further quarterly reports from the Civil Engineering Management showed that the implementation of construction sites and infrastructure measures is proceeding as planned. The current status of the Mobility Development Concept (MEK) and the report from the Accident Commission demonstrate that the city of Neuss is making data-driven decisions to increase road safety and efficiency.

Outlook: Safer, More Accessible, and Sustainable Traffic in Neuss

The measures and decisions of February 2026 show that Neuss is actively working on the future of mobility on various levels. From the redesign of traffic facilities to political initiatives for greater safety and sustainability, the city is relying on a variety of solutions to meet the demands of the future.

Even though political differences were highlighted — be it in parking space management, the 30 km/h network, or the prioritization of public transport tracks — the will to further develop the traffic infrastructure is evident. In the coming months, it will be interesting to observe how these measures will affect reality and whether they will meet the expectations of the citizens.
