Speed Limit 30, School Streets, and the Future of Mobility: What's Moving in Lohmar in March 2026

In March 2026, important decisions and debates on mobility took center stage in Lohmar. From speed limits at the town entrance to digital school streets – the city is focusing on increased safety, sustainability, and citizen participation.

Speed Limit 30, Digital School Streets, and More: Mobility in Lohmar in March 2026

Mobility in Lohmar is in the spotlight in March 2026. With a comprehensive package of measures aimed at traffic safety, speed reduction, and structural traffic calming, the city is striving to create more quality of life for pedestrians, cyclists, and residents. At the same time, the future of mobility is being shaped by digital projects and funding programs that guide Lohmar toward sustainable infrastructure and climate protection.

Speed Limit 30 and Structural Measures: Safety Through Speed Reduction

The reduction of the speed limit from 70 to 50 km/h on the L84 in Weilerhohn and Stumpf is a central issue based on citizen petitions. The background includes accidents, noise pollution, and a dangerous bus stop area at the primary school. Although the administration points out legal uncertainties, solutions such as digital speed displays, road narrowing, and hidden speed checks are being discussed.

In Mackenbach, too, the 30 km/h speed limit is under discussion. The administration has been tasked with examining traffic calming humps and speed bumps to reduce speeds at the lower town entrance. In Schachenaueler Straße and Ingerer Straße, traffic trials are underway and will be presented to the committee in the coming weeks.

However, structural measures such as Berliner Kissen (Berlin cushions) or Kölner Teller (Cologne plates) are not without risks. They can burden cyclists, increase noise, and reduce parking space. Nevertheless, they remain a central element in the city's strategy to reduce speed and increase safety.

Digital School Streets: Safety for the Youngest Road Users

The Green Party faction has submitted a proposal to participate in the North Rhine-Westphalia funding program for digital, temporary road closures at school streets. The goal is to provide primary school children in towns like Lohmar with more safety. The idea behind school streets is to exclude motor vehicle traffic during drop-off and pick-up times—either through automated bollards or digital recognition of authorized vehicles.

The legal basis for school streets is clear: § 45 StVO (German Road Traffic Regulations) for traffic trials and § 7 StrWG NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia Road Traffic Act) for partial road withdrawal. Funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is possible until April 30, 2026, and the grant amounts to up to 100,000 euros. This makes the project attractive not only politically, but also financially.

At the same time, discussions are underway on how to incorporate parent stops, drop-off and pick-up zones, and digital barriers into the planning. The safety of children is the central goal—and Lohmar could take a pioneering role in the right bank region with this project.

Funding Competitions and Model Projects: The Future of Mobility in the Region

In addition to classic traffic safety measures, Lohmar is also relying on modern funding programs. A model project for electric mobility is being examined, which could see electric charging stations installed on lampposts in Honrath and Neuhonrath. This could accelerate the transition to emission-free mobility.

Another project is participation in the school street funding competition, which runs until December 31, 2027. This is not only about safety, but also about better traffic guidance and the integration of digital technologies. The city sees an opportunity here to position itself as a modern and citizen-friendly partner.

Inter-Municipal Cooperation: Vision Zero and Mobile Speed Cameras

The city of Lohmar plans to cooperate with Siegburg and Hennef in the area of mobile speed cameras. The goal is to reduce speed in road traffic and lower accident rates—a vision known as "Vision Zero." According to the administration, the purchase and operation of mobile speed cameras can already pay for themselves in a short time.

At the same time, traffic data collection is being expanded. With devices such as "SDR Traffic+," speed indicators and vehicle categorization are analyzed. This data will be used in future planning steps and allows for a more precise assessment of the traffic situation.

Conclusion: Mobility in Lohmar – Safety, Sustainability, and Citizen Participation

Lohmar is moving toward a sustainable, safe, and citizen-oriented mobility in March 2026. The discussions on speed limit 30, digital school streets, and inter-municipal cooperation show that the city is acting on multiple levels. With funding projects, structural measures, and digital solutions, Lohmar is not only focusing on safety, but also on innovation.

In the coming weeks and months, it will be interesting to see which measures will be implemented and how the traffic situation in the city will change. One clear message is already visible: Lohmar wants to keep pace with the mobility of the future—and to maintain the safety and quality of life of its citizens in the process.
