Mobility and Traffic in Lohmar: Between Safety, Speed and the Future

In February 2026, central topics of mobility were once again in focus in Lohmar. Speed reduction, improvement of cycling infrastructure, and safety for schoolchildren shaped the discussions – but legal limits and financial planning also played a role. An overview of the most important decisions and debates.

Mobility in Discussion: Speed, Safety and Future Perspectives

Mobility is not just a technical issue in Lohmar – it is a social, ecological, and climate policy focal point. In February 2026, the Committee for Traffic and Mobility discussed numerous proposals ranging from speed reduction and traffic calming to the future of e-mobility. The debates reflect the challenges of a city that must balance safety, traffic friendliness, and climate protection.

Speed Reduction: Between Safety Needs and Legal Limits

One of the central topics of the February meeting was the reduction of speed on certain streets. In particular, a citizen's proposal was submitted to reduce the maximum speed from 70 to 50 km/h on the L84 (Lohmar-Weilerhohn/Stumpf). This proposal follows a long series of similar initiatives, such as in the Dorfstraße Krahwinkel or in the Schachenaueler Straße, where studies for a bicycle street have already been commissioned.

The city administration is currently checking whether the legal prerequisites for such a reduction are met. In addition to local traffic conditions, the responsibility of Straßen.NRW also plays a role. In some cases, such as on the Schachenaueler Straße, applications have encountered legal hurdles – for example, if a 60 km/h zone cannot be implemented due to administrative regulations.

The motivation behind these proposals is clear: more safety for children, seniors and pedestrians, as well as less noise and pollutants. Hidden speed checks and structural measures such as digital speed displays or road narrowing are discussed as effective tools.

School and Mobility: Safety for the Youngest Users

Another focus was on road safety for students. One-way streets and drop-off/pick-up zones have already been established at Lohmar Comprehensive School and on the Birkenweg. In February 2026, it was examined whether further measures – such as in the Schmiedgasse – would be useful to calm school traffic.

The situation at the bus stop for line 555 in Geber was particularly critically discussed. Here, children have to cross the street – a risk factor that has already led to accidents in the past. The administration is tasked with reviewing the route and stops in consultation with the Rhein-Sieg district and the RSVG, and if necessary, adjusting them.

In addition, a traffic study for the intersection at the K13 is planned to enable barrier-free guidance and better signage. The goal is to make school traffic safer and at the same time more climate-friendly.

Cycling and E-Mobility: Future Perspectives in Focus

Lohmar is increasingly focusing on the expansion of cycling infrastructure. The administrative agreement for the RadPendlerRoute along the B507 has already been adopted, and the Mobilstation at Honrather train station is being expanded. Here, lockable bicycle boxes and a pedelec station are planned – measures that the city positions as part of its mobility concept.

E-mobility is another central topic. Proposals from the Greens, SPD and UWG led to the fact that the city is considering the examination of e-charging stations on street lamps in Honrath and Neuhonrath. In addition, a fast-charging park of the Deutschlandnetz is being considered in Lohmar. These measures fit into the charging infrastructure concept of the Rhein-Sieg district and contribute to climate neutrality.

Parking Management and Traffic Calming: Between Resident Interests and Safety

Parking policy in Lohmar remains controversial. A proposal for no-stopping zones in the Kapellenstraße was rejected in 2020, despite residents raising safety concerns. In the current debate, a traffic and parking concept is being examined for several streets, including the Ingerer Straße and the Platanenweg. The aim is to create parking bays where necessary and to establish no-stopping zones to improve traffic conditions.

The parking situation in "Auf der Hardt" is also being re-evaluated, as there is a bottleneck for residents and visitors here. The city is pursuing a holistic approach – not only for traffic, but also for the living experience in Lohmar.

Outlook: Mobility with Responsibility

The debates in February 2026 show that Lohmar is actively working on the future of mobility. Speed, safety and environmental pollution are not isolated issues, but closely interlinked. The city is facing the challenge of taking legal limits into account, considering the interests of residents and yet making progress in the areas of climate protection and road safety.

In 2026 it will depend on how well the planned measures are implemented – and whether the citizens of Lohmar are brought on board to actively shape the mobility of the future.
