Culture and Community in Iserlohn: Outlook for February 2026

In Iserlohn, the Cultural Committee is actively working to strengthen cultural structures. The focus lies on new initiatives such as the sponsorship association „Is‘ Kult“, the awarding of the Homeland Prize, and cultural youth programs. In February 2026, further steps toward developing a vibrant cultural landscape were in the spotlight.

News from the Sponsorship Association „Is‘ Kult“ and its Role in the Cultural Strategy

The sponsorship association „Is‘ Kult“ was founded in October 2025 and has since become a central player in Iserlohn's cultural landscape. In February 2026, the presentation of the association was on the agenda of the Cultural Committee. The association's goal is to support cultural projects ideologically and financially and to strengthen civic engagement in the cultural sector.

The presentation not only informed the committee members but also served as a foundation for future collaborations. The association is purpose-bound and falls under the 2026 budget plan. Funds for cultural projects are administered through the association, enabling the financial processing to be independent of the municipal budget.

In addition, the association is also supported in the development of sponsorship packages for events such as the „is’kult“ Summer Festival and the Cultural Fair. These measures are part of a broader plan to apply for third-party funding and to secure cultural offerings financially.

Cultural Youth Programs: The Kulturrucksack NRW in Iserlohn

Iserlohn has been a location for the Kulturrucksack NRW since 2013, a program for children and young people aged 10 to 14. For 2026, numerous cultural and creative projects are planned under the motto „Art and Creativity for All.“

For 2026, Iserlohn will receive approximately 25,700 euros from the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Culture and Science. Planned projects range from circus and theater courses to graffiti and street art workshops, as well as fashion and jewelry courses and digital workshops on robotics, 3D printing, and DJing. The event locations are diverse: Kunstfabrik casa b, AWO, Stiftungshof, and the Friederike-Fliedner-BK sports hall.

The projects are part of a broader strategy to promote cultural education and creative self-expression among youth. Although there is a slight deficit in the budget plan, the city still plans to implement all projects. The final approval from the Kulturrucksack NRW has not yet been received, but the planning list was submitted by the end of January 2026.

Rented Studio in Barendorf: Artistic and Cultural Use of the Historical Factory Complex

The historical factory complex Maste-Barendorf is a central cultural hub in Iserlohn. In February 2026, the re-rental of a studio in House F was on the agenda. Petra Loos, an experienced goldsmith, was ultimately preferred because her craft fits well with the history of Barendorf and she has demonstrated strong commitment in the museum sector.

The studio itself is 96 square meters and includes storage and workshop space, as well as a kitchen and bathroom. The sum of the cold rent and operating costs amounts to approximately 590 euros per month. Loos plans to make her workshop publicly accessible and to participate in museum events. She also intends to integrate other artists into her space and organize exhibitions.

The acquisition of a studio in Barendorf is another step to strengthen the creative use of the historical complex. The factory already houses a museum, a café, exhibition venues, and residences for artists. It is also a venue for cultural events such as the Christmas Barendorf, the DrahtSaitenAkt, and the Electro-Festival Abrakadabra.

Outlook: Cultural Impulses for the Future

The developments of February 2026 show that Iserlohn is on a good path to strengthening its cultural identity. The sponsorship association „Is‘ Kult“ has the potential to play a central role in the development of cultural projects. At the same time, it becomes clear that investments in cultural youth programs and the use of historical spaces for creative purposes are essential to keep the city lively and attractive.

Even though challenges such as the lack of a cultural manager or a small budget flexibility exist, Iserlohn is ready to find solutions. The planned „is’kult“ Cultural Fair in 2027, the expansion of the Summer Festival, and the intensified cooperation with partner cities are further steps in this direction.
