Gelsenkirchen: Social Housing Design in Focus – How Senior Housing and Grants for Senior Activities Were Discussed in February 2026
In February 2026, important decisions regarding social services and senior housing were at the center of attention in Gelsenkirchen. The Management Committee for Senior Housing and the Advisory Board for Seniors discussed modernization plans, occupancy challenges, and grants for non-profit projects. This blog provides an in-depth look at the background, challenges, and future visions.
Modernization and the Future: Gelsenkirchen Relies on Housing Group Concepts
In February 2026, the Management Committee for Senior Housing in Gelsenkirchen convened to discuss current developments in elderly care. A central topic was the modernization of the Senior House at Schonnebecker Str. 108. Architect Mr. Lux presented the current planning status, which aims at a so-called housing group concept. This model, based on stationary house communities, is intended to improve residents' quality of life through everyday activities, social participation, and individual customization options. The goal is to address care needs on-site through multiprofessional teams, with care itself becoming a supportive element.
Occupancy Challenges and Rising Costs in Care
The meeting also highlighted the challenges currently facing Gelsenkirchen's senior housing. Occupancy rates in the third quarter of 2025 were at 94.7%, significantly below the 98% requested by cost bearers. Main reasons for this are difficulties in filling double rooms and increasing staff absence rates in care. In 2025, staff absence rates ranged from 15% to 21%, leading to temporary admission stops and increased costs through external service providers. At the same time, care needs are rising while revenues remain stagnant. This trend necessitates an adjustment of care levels and closer coordination with cost bearers.
Grants for Senior Activities: Promoting Social Participation
At the same time, the Advisory Board for Seniors discussed the allocation of grants for activities with senior citizens in 2026. A total of 20,000 € is available, with nine projects receiving funding. These include initiatives such as "Coffee and Chat in Bergmannsglück," excursions to Münster or Tecklenburg, first-aid training, and the "Volxxküche" meeting point. These projects aim to strengthen social contacts, combat loneliness, and promote the participation of the elderly. The grants are awarded according to strict criteria and must be accounted for by March 31, 2027.
Outlook: Stability and Innovation in Senior Services
The decisions made in February 2026 show how Gelsenkirchen is responding to current challenges in care while also investing in the long-term future. By modernizing senior housing and supporting civic initiatives, the city is combining stability with innovation. Challenges such as staff shortages and rising care needs remain and require continuous adjustments. However, Gelsenkirchen has clearly set a course with the housing group concept and close cooperation with social actors – moving away from purely medical care toward independent living in everyday life.
