Mobility in Dinslaken: Infrastructure Expansion and the Future of the Cycle Superhighway

In March 2026, Dinslaken made important decisions in the field of mobility that will strongly influence future transport planning and infrastructure. The focus was on the Wesel County Local Transport Plan, the Wesel–Voerde–Dinslaken Cycle Superhighway, and the reactivation of the Walsumbahn.

Mobility in Dinslaken: Infrastructure Expansion and the Future of the Cycle Superhighway

Mobility in Dinslaken is a key factor for the city's future viability. In March 2026, several projects and plans were in the spotlight, all of which significantly influence transport planning and infrastructure. Particularly the Wesel County Local Transport Plan 2025 and the feasibility study for the Wesel–Voerde–Dinslaken Cycle Superhighway illustrate how strongly Dinslaken is committed to multimodal and sustainable mobility.

Wesel County Local Transport Plan 2025: Dinslaken's Critical Comments

In November 2025, the draft of the fifth Wesel County Local Transport Plan was submitted to the municipalities. Dinslaken subsequently issued a statement highlighting several critical points. For example, the plan lacks detailed should-be/actual analyses and route summaries, making the planning process more difficult. Additionally, the Walsumbahn is not sufficiently considered, despite its potential role in connecting Lohberg and the hospitals during weekend traffic.

The city therefore calls for a better integration of the Walsumbahn in Chapter 6.1.2 of the local transport plan. At the same time, it is emphasized that lines 17 and 19, which form the backbone of the city's public transport, must be further developed to meet increasing demands.

Wesel–Voerde–Dinslaken Cycle Superhighway: Feasibility Study Completed

One of the central topics in Dinslaken was the feasibility study for the cycle superhighway (RSV) between Wesel, Voerde, and Dinslaken. The study, which was jointly funded by the three cities, has shown that an RSV is economically and technically feasible. The preferred variant is 14.91 km long and offers a target speed of at least 30 km/h. The route is planned to meet a quality standard of at least 4 meters in width for two-way traffic with a separation from pedestrians.

The feasibility study examined five route variants (A to E), with variants A and B standing out as particularly advantageous. Crossing the Lippe River over the B 8 bridge is considered the best option, as the Lippeaue nature reserve hinders alternative route alignments. The study also showed a positive cost-benefit ratio and confirmed the project's economic viability. The strategic environmental assessment is planned for the first quarter of 2026.

Walsumbahn: Future as a Cycling Connection?

The Walsumbahn has been mentioned in several planning initiatives as a potential component of the cycle superhighway. Reactivating the railway line would certainly involve significant investments – particularly for the overhead structures over the Emmelsumer and Frankfurter streets as well as the Wesel-Datteln Canal – but could create a new link in the regional cycling network in the long term. In the future, the Walsumbahn could not only be used as a railway, but also as a cycle path, making it an attractive element of mobility in Dinslaken.

Further Projects and Administrative Measures

In addition to the cycle superhighway and the Walsumbahn, other topics were also in focus. The city of Dinslaken plans to reappoint the Mobility Working Group to better coordinate the various planning and project activities in the future. There are also discussions about repealing the decision to build a P+R car park at the train station. A direct line between Dinslaken and Schermbeck (SB02) and an extended route for line 19 in connection with a new residential area are further topics to be intensively discussed in the coming weeks.

Outlook and Challenges

The decisions and planning initiatives from March 2026 show that Dinslaken is placing its bets on sustainable and multimodal mobility. The cycle superhighway is a central element that could connect the city with its neighbors and significantly strengthen cycling. At the same time, the improvement of public transport and the integration of the Walsumbahn into the transport network remain challenges that must be intensively addressed in the coming years.

The feasibility study for the cycle superhighway is an important milestone that must now move into concrete planning. This will also involve financial aspects such as the costs for civil engineering structures, land acquisition, and diversions. The city of Dinslaken will rely on support from the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan and the North Rhine-Westphalia State Plan in this process.
