Sports Policy in Bonn: Highlights and Challenges in March 2026

In March 2026, Bonn was at the center of numerous sports-related political decisions, ranging from international sporting events to infrastructure projects and climate-conscious sports promotion. This deep dive highlights the most important developments and their implications.

Further Developing Bonn as a Sports Destination

In March 2026, the city of Bonn made a range of sports policy decisions that include both short-term highlights and long-term planning. The Sports Committee met on March 19 and approved several subsidies for international sporting events, as well as pilot projects and renovation measures. At the same time, climate policy initiatives and infrastructure challenges were discussed.

International Sporting Events Supported

A central focus of the meeting was the support of international sporting events. The Tennis Club Blau-Gelb Bonn-Beuel 1960 e.V. received a subsidy of up to 29,500 euros for hosting the ATP Challenger tournament "Bonn Open 2026." With an expected 12,000 spectators and world-class players, the tournament is a prestigious event that strengthens Bonn's position as an international sports location. The event, which takes place from July 26 to August 2, will be broadcast live on the ATP website.

Other supported events included the International U16 Water Polo Tournament "Nordic League," the European Rhine Regatta of the Bonn Rowing Club, and the International Rhine Diving Cup in Artistic and Springboard Diving. These subsidies underline Bonn’s commitment to international sports events and the associated economic and cultural strengthening of the city.

Sustainability and Climate Protection in Sports

As part of the Climate Plan 2035, the initiative "Sustainable Sports Clubs Bonn" was launched. The goal is to support sports clubs in implementing climate-friendly measures, such as energy efficiency, life cycle assessments, or climate protection training. This initiative shows that Bonn sees sport not only as a leisure and economic factor but also as a key to achieving climate policy goals.

Infrastructure and Utilization Management

Another focus was the renovation of artificial turf pitches until 2031 in accordance with EU regulation. With this, Bonn is following European guidelines to ensure the safety and sustainability of sports facilities. In addition, a pilot project for utilization analysis of municipal sports halls was launched. The aim is to optimize usage and develop better planning tools for the city's sports facilities in the future.

Challenges in the Bathing Facilities Landscape

The discussion about Bonn's bathing facilities landscape remains tense. With the Hardtbergbad undergoing renovation, a Melbbad that will not reopen before 2029, and a Frankenbad with an uncertain future, the availability of swimming areas in the city is temporarily limited. In this context, the proposal for a bathing ship on the Rhine was discussed once again. The city plans to coordinate with the Badeschiff Bonn association to find a solution for more swimming areas. However, the implementation depends on financial resources in the municipal budget.

Outlook and Challenges

With the start of the 2026 outdoor swimming season and the planned renovation measures as well as climate policy initiatives, Bonn has chosen a clear sports policy course. The support of international events strengthens the city's visibility, while sustainable and infrastructural measures aim to secure the future of sports in Bonn. At the same time, the bathing facilities landscape remains a central issue that must be intensively addressed in the coming years.
