Mobility in Bonn: Traffic Policy Decisions in May and June 2026

The mobility situation in Bonn has significantly evolved in the months of May and June 2026. Numerous political applications, citizen initiatives, and municipal plans were processed and implemented during the meetings of the district committees and the Committee for Mobility and Transport. The goal was to increase road safety, improve traffic conditions for cyclists and pedestrians, and optimize infrastructure for public transport and private traffic.

Bicycle Infrastructure: A Focus of Municipal Action

A central focus was on bicycle infrastructure. During the meeting on May 19, 2026, it was decided to set up a Protected Bike Lane on the Maximilian-Kolbe Bridge. In addition, several proposals for the installation of bike racks and bike stands were discussed and partially implemented.

Bike racks were installed in areas such as the Meckenheimer Allee, at Heerstraße 205, and at the Kindergarten St. Joseph. The Green district faction also advocated for the ongoing installation of bike parking spaces, in order to strengthen cycling in the long term. Another citizen proposal suggested the conversion of car parking spaces into bicycle parking areas, particularly at Badener Straße 2.

30 km/h Zones and Traffic Calming: Safety in the Focus

There were also concrete decisions on traffic calming and speed control in the months of May and June 2026. A new 30 km/h sign was installed on the Lievelingsweg. In addition, a proposal for a gap closure in the 30 km/h zone in the Karl-Barth-Straße was discussed. In the Sebastianstraße (Endenich), a 30 km/h zone is being established to increase safety in the vicinity of schools and residential areas.

Further measures concern the Kölnstraße, where a traffic calming plan is being developed after the closure of the Nordbrücke. The FDP also submitted a proposal for the installation of an additional right-turn traffic light at the intersection Bornheimer Straße / Guido-Westerwelle-Brücke to optimize traffic flow.

Sidewalks and Accessibility: Improvements in the City Center

Concrete measures were also decided on accessibility and sidewalk conditions in Bonn. Two pedestrian crossings were set up in the area of the Carl-Schurz-School. In addition, a proposal from the SPD called for the installation of a zebra crossing at the traffic island on the Lievelingsweg.

Further measures include the curb height reduction in front of the underpass at Königstraße/Ecke Kaiserstraße, which was discussed in a proposal. In addition, the restoration of visibility markings at the Weberstraße/Kaiserstraße underpass was decided in order to improve pedestrian safety.

Road Construction and Renovations: Investment in Infrastructure

The renovation work on the Oppenhoffstraße as well as the renovation of the Rhine cycle path are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026.

The installation of 30 km/h zones and traffic calming measures are also to be implemented in the coming weeks. The accessibility measures, especially the curb height reductions and pedestrian crossings, are also planned for the coming months.
