Youth Participation in Bonn: A Look Ahead to April 2026

In April 2026, Bonn made a stronger commitment to structured and diverse youth participation. The Advisory Board for Children's and Youth Participation made key decisions on representation, rules of procedure, and new participation projects.

Youth Participation in Bonn: Structure, Representation, and Future

In Bonn, the inclusion of young people in political decision-making processes is not just a formal concern – it is a central component of local democracy. The Advisory Board for Children's and Youth Participation, composed of half youth members and a quarter each from political and administrative representatives, realigned itself in several ways in April 2026.

Appointment of the Secretary and Election of Spokespersons

During the meeting on April 17, 2026, Mr. Stephan Wielpütz was appointed as the Secretary of the Advisory Board, supported by Mr. Can Sürgit and Ms. Sonja Vogt as deputies. The appointment was unanimous and marks a clear structuring of internal communication and documentation.

In addition, new spokespersons were elected: Anton Schneider, Sophie Freitag, and Ali Alhadi Alhasani. The election followed the rules of procedure and required a majority of valid votes. The unanimous amendment of the decision shows that the composition of the spokespersons received broad approval and ensures the representativeness of the advisory board remains intact.

Adjustment of the Rules of Procedure and Representation in Committees

The rules of procedure of the advisory board were adjusted to implement the council decision DS 260275. Due to the increasing number of political representatives (now nine), the composition had to be rebalanced to avoid jeopardizing the committee's functionality. The changes were unanimously adopted and mark a step toward greater flexibility while ensuring youth representation remains secure.

Another milestone was the appointment of Titus Rickert as an advisory member of the Youth Welfare Committee, accompanied by Chantal Kayser as the deputy. This representation underlines the growing role of young people in political processes and enables a more direct involvement in issues such as youth social work or educational policy.

Climate Advisory Board and Participation Concept for Rheingärten

In addition to representation in the Youth Welfare Committee, the representation of children and young people in the Climate Advisory Board was also discussed. The Climate Advisory Board, which has been functioning as an advisory body since November 2025, is responsible for climate protection and adaptation to climate change. Youth representation will provide a binding voice for the perspective of younger generations here.

Another focus was the revised Participation Concept for Rheingärten, updated in April 2026. The aim is to strengthen participation in this urban district and to involve young people more closely in planning processes. The changes to the concept were unanimously adopted and show the city's willingness to establish youth participation as a central part of urban planning.

Conclusion: Youth Participation as a Central Element of Bonn's Policy

April 2026 highlights that the city of Bonn sees youth participation not only as a formal obligation, but as a central building block of local democracy. Through the appointment of new leaders, the adjustment of the rules of procedure, and representation in important committees, the voices of young people influence political decisions more strongly than ever.

Although challenges such as the balance between structure and flexibility remain, there is a clear commitment to the participation of young people in Bonn. The future of youth participation in Bonn will depend on whether these structures can be sustainably further developed and communicated to the broader public.
