Traffic and Safety Policy in Bad Münstereifel: April 2026 in Focus

In April 2026, the focus in Bad Münstereifel was on the safety and design of urban traffic areas. The Committee for Environment, Tourism, and Mobility discussed measures to improve traffic conditions in several districts as well as long-term planning.

Traffic Planning and Safety Measures in Bad Münstereifel

For several years now, the city of Bad Münstereifel has been increasingly focused on safety in mobility. In April 2026, several traffic situations were once again on the agenda of the Committee for Environment, Tourism, and Mobility – including the Rönnstraße, the Gilsdorfer Weg and the Brunnenstraße. In addition, a traffic and safety concept for the city center is currently being planned.

Traffic Calming in Rönnstraße – Old Problems, New Ideas

The Rönnstraße, a 30 km/h zone and the main access route to the district of Nöthen, is a recurring topic in the city's traffic planning. In March 2026, the UWV faction requested the installation of parking pockets and additional speed-reducing measures. The proposal was once again brought up for discussion in the committee on April 28, 2026.

Although "shark teeth" and a pictogram (30 km/h) were already approved in 2025, the funds for implementation were not available at that time. For 2026, the marking of these measures is planned, while the installation of parking pockets remains unfeasible. The administration explains this with a lack of budget and unchanged traffic conditions.

The discussion shows how delicate the balance between safety, traffic flow, and financial feasibility can be. Some factions are calling for more 30 km/h elements, while others argue that the existing measures should be implemented first before adding new ones.

Guardrail on Gilsdorfer Weg – Safety in Focus

Another topic in April was the installation of a guardrail on the Gilsdorfer Weg, near the Bistro "Plan B." Due to the steep slope in this area, there is an increased risk of accidents, particularly in winter. The cost of the measure is estimated at around €15,500.

The proposal was rejected in 2025, as the traffic and accident situation was assessed as "unremarkable" and no funds were available. When the proposal was again presented, the rejection by the administration remained. This illustrates how sensitive decisions about safety measures can be – especially when they incur high costs and the necessity is not clearly demonstrable.

Brunnenstraße: Visual Narrowing as a Safety Strategy

Traffic safety is also to be improved in the Brunnenstraße. The UWV faction proposed the installation of two tree islands and parking pockets to create a visual narrowing effect and reduce vehicle speeds.

The proposal remained controversial during the meeting on April 28, 2026. With 12 votes in favor and 2 against, the proposal was rejected. The administration argues that marking parking areas does not necessarily contribute to traffic calming and that the costs (around €3,500) would recur regularly.

The discussion makes clear how often even small measures meet resistance – not due to a lack of interest in safety, but due to financial and planning considerations.

Working Group for a Traffic and Safety Concept in the City Center

In addition to specific measures in individual streets, the city is planning a comprehensive traffic and safety concept for the city center. A working group has been established for this purpose, consisting of representatives from politics, administration, residents, business owners, the restaurant industry, the city marketing association, and the disability advisory board.

The constitutive meeting is planned for June 2026. The goal is to develop long-term solutions that are tailored to the needs of citizens and the economy. The working group will advise the Committee for Environment, Tourism, and Mobility and will then be approved by the City Council.

Setting up such a working group is a clear signal: Bad Münstereifel wants to plan actively, not just react.

Outlook: Safety as a Central Future Topic

The discussions in April 2026 show how complex the challenges in urban traffic planning are. Safety, costs, feasibility, and citizen participation must always be carefully balanced.

By establishing a working group for a traffic and safety concept, the city has taken its first step toward long-term planning and citizen participation. Whether and how the proposed measures will be implemented in the coming months remains to be seen – but one thing is clear: traffic safety will continue to play a central role in the coming years.
