Traffic Policy in Wolfsburg: Focus on Mobility Station, Parking Bans, and Construction Projects

Traffic Policy in Wolfsburg: Focus on Mobility Station, Parking Bans, and Construction Projects

In March 2026, several traffic policy measures were in focus in Wolfsburg, particularly in the Westhagen district. In addition to the delayed start of construction for the mobility station, parking and stopping bans were discussed to improve traffic safety and flow.

Mobility Station Westhagen: Construction Start and Impacts

In March 2026, construction work for the Westhagen Mobility Station began at the Dresdener Ring, after the planned start had been postponed for several days due to weather conditions. The construction, which is expected to continue until March 31, 2026, is anticipated to last six to eight weeks. The administration emphasizes that the construction site will remain largely passable for motor vehicles, public transport, pedestrians, and cyclists, although minor restrictions may occur.

For public transport (ÖPNV), a temporary replacement stop will be set up on the western side of the Dresdener Ring, while pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be directed along the eastern side of the street. These measures aim to ensure a smooth traffic flow while the mobility station is being built.

Stopping Bans in Hallesche Straße: Focus on Safety

Another central topic was the CDU's motion for a restricted stopping ban in Hallesche Straße, particularly at the junctions with Altenburger Straße and Plauener Straße. This is justified by the fact that parked vehicles endanger flowing traffic and obstruct visibility at junctions.

The proposed measures include a rotating stopping ban on both sides of the street, with parking bans before and after intersections as per § 12 Abs. 3 No. 1 StVO. In addition, lowered curbs and traffic-calmed areas are intended to expand the parking ban. Although the traffic authority currently does not consider new stopping bans to be essential, the motion for a restricted stopping ban is unanimously supported in order to increase traffic safety.

Trailer Parking Ban on Dresdener Ring

Another controversially discussed issue was the motion for a trailer parking ban in the area of the Dresdener Ring. According to § 12 Abs. 3a StVO, parking of heavy vehicles and trailers is already prohibited in residential areas between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., as well as on Sundays and public holidays. However, the area around the Dresdener Ring is classified as a general residential area according to the zoning plan, which means that an additional parking ban would not be legally enforceable there.

Nevertheless, a motion for time-limited parking bans in disruptive areas such as mixed-use zones was discussed. In addition, the administration emphasizes that trailers not connected to a towing vehicle must be moved within 14 days. The goal is to improve traffic flow and reduce conflicts between trailer owners and drivers looking for parking spaces.

Conclusion: Traffic Safety and Planning in a Delicate Balance

Traffic policy in Wolfsburg in March 2026 showed how complex the challenges in the field of mobility are. On the one hand, concrete construction projects such as the Westhagen Mobility Station were implemented, while on the other hand, stopping and parking bans were in focus to ensure safety and fluidity in road traffic.

In the future, it will be important to see how well these measures function in practice and whether they can contribute to long-term relief of the traffic infrastructure. Particularly in urban areas like Westhagen, where parking pressure and intersection conflicts exist, it remains important to find flexible solutions that ensure both traffic safety and the usability of street spaces.
