Sports Facilities in Oldenburg – State of Repair and Expansion Plans in March 2026
In March 2026, urgent renovation measures at the Brandsweg Sports Hall in Oldenburg will be a priority. At the same time, planning for a new three-court sports hall in the area of Fliegerhorst Primary School is underway. The City Council and various committees are discussing solutions to the renovation needs and the expansion of the sports infrastructure.
Renovation of the Brandsweg Sports Hall: Urgent Need for Action
The Brandsweg Sports Hall, a central sports facility in Oldenburg, is currently at the center of political debate. The FDP faction has submitted an urgent motion for renovation measures, as the hall is in serious need of repair and its use for school sports and club activities is at risk. Faulty light domes, an inadequate sports floor, leaking roof waterproofing, and substandard sanitary facilities not only threaten the operation of the sports hall but also pose significant injury risks.
The city administration is now tasked with developing a comprehensive repair and renovation program. The decision on this will be made during the BEGH meeting on 05.03.2026 and the City Council meeting on 16.03.2026. An urgent upgrade is sought, as the hall must remain in use until the new six-court hall is completed.
Expansion of the Sports Infrastructure: New Three-Court Hall in Planning
While the Brandsweg Hall urgently needs renovation, a new construction is also in the planning phase. A modern three-court sports hall is planned in conjunction with Fliegerhorst Primary School. The Sports Committee has already expressed support for this, and the preparation of tender documents is scheduled for summer 2026. The estimated cost for the three-court hall is just under 20 million euros.
Particular attention is being paid to climate neutrality in operation. The new hall is intended not only to be functionally modern but also ecologically sustainable. This is another step toward a future-proof sports infrastructure in Oldenburg.
Administration and Political Coordination: Challenges and Solutions
The renovation and new construction plans illustrate the complexity with which the city of Oldenburg must deal in the area of sports facilities. On the one hand, there is the urgent need for renovation of existing halls, on the other hand, the expansion of infrastructure for future generations.
The organization of necessary meetings – particularly in the BEGH and the Sports Committee – as well as coordination with the city administration and the relevant specialist departments are crucial for implementation. In addition, political majorities must be secured for the required investments. The FDP faction has already sent a clear signal in this regard, but other factions will also be involved in the decision-making process.
Another agenda item related to sports facilities is the report on the changing rooms building in the Dornstede Sports Park and the planning for Röwekamp Primary School. These projects show that the city of Oldenburg is working simultaneously on improving its sports infrastructure in several areas.
Outlook: Sustainable Sports Infrastructure as a Central Element of Urban Development
The renovation measures at the Brandsweg Hall and the construction of the new three-court hall in Fliegerhorst are not isolated projects but part of a broader plan to ensure and expand the sports infrastructure in Oldenburg. The city is pursuing a long-term perspective in which safety, usability, and sustainability are the key priorities.
The challenge lies in aligning the needs of current users – from students through clubs to professional sports – with the requirements of future-oriented urban planning. The political decisions in March 2026 will set a decisive milestone in this regard.
