Culture and Community in Nordhorn: Impulses, Projects, and Challenges in March 2026

In March 2026, Nordhorn's cultural policy sets impulses through support, events, and preparations for the 2029 anniversary. The focus lies on inclusion, structural development, and civic participation.

Culture as a Link in Nordhorn

Culture is more than just a leisure activity – it connects, enriches, and strengthens the community. In Nordhorn, this is particularly noticeable this year. With a wide range of projects, exhibitions, funding, and planning for future large-scale events, the city is setting impulses in March 2026 that touch both artistic and societal dimensions. In this context, artistic diversity is not the only focus, but also the role of culture as a social force that brings together people of different ages and backgrounds.

Cultural Projects with Social Relevance

In March 2026, important decisions were made regarding cultural funding that are boosting the mood in the city. Theater education projects such as "In meinen Schuhen II" and "Gemeinsam stark!" were supported with a total of 13,486 euros. The former addresses women aged 14 and older, while the latter targets children aged 8 to 12. These projects combine artistic work with educational goals and contribute to social participation.

In addition, municipal grants for choir projects and exhibitions were approved, with the interest group Nordhorner Chöre und Musikgruppen (Nordhorn Choirs and Music Groups) receiving up to 1,500 euros. This funding is part of a financial support system for unmet needs, making it possible to implement projects despite financial constraints. The city of Nordhorn clearly demonstrates its commitment to supporting cultural diversity and strengthening the local creative scene.

Structural Developments and Investments

Another focus was on infrastructural measures. The music school is planning a "Music School App" to improve communication with parents. At the same time, the renovation of the music school building on Lingener Straße is scheduled for March 2027, with the move already planned for March 2025 to Bentheimer Straße. Such investments are crucial to ensuring the quality of music education and adapting the infrastructure to future requirements.

The city library has also expanded its role as a cultural meeting place. In addition to regular use, it offers space for events through the "Bibliothek der Dinge" (Library of Things), which is closed on Mondays. This illustrates how cultural institutions are being flexibly used to meet social and cultural needs.

Preparation for the 2029 Anniversary: 650 Years of Nordhorn

The preparation for the 2029 anniversary is a central aspect of cultural planning. A working group has been established to collect and thematically structure ideas. Topics such as "Festival am Wasser" (Water Festival), "Stadtschützenfest" (City Marksman's Festival), or the "Nordhorner Lesenacht" (Nordhorn Reading Night) are in focus. The city plans broad civic participation to evaluate suggestions in public discourse and to encourage the submission of new ideas.

The projects are categorized by costs (K1–K4) and effort (A1–A4), enabling transparent planning and budgeting. A fundamental decision by the Council is planned by the end of 2026 at the latest. This structured approach shows how Nordhorn is preparing for a major cultural event that will unite historical and modern elements.

The Old Weaving Mill as a Cultural Center

The Old Weaving Mill remains a central cultural hub with its wide range of events. In March 2026, the focus was on planning for the year 2026, including the "Festival am Wasser" and the symphony orchestra concert. In addition, the Old Weaving Mill will also be used for the International Women's Day event, highlighting the social character of the venue.

However, there are challenges: The Balancemesse hinders the planning of certain events, and the renovation requires adjustments due to legally mandated escape routes. At the same time, Managing Director Nele Overhageböck should be highlighted as a driving force behind the positive development of the Old Weaving Mill.

Outlook: Culture as an Investment in the Future

Nordhorn is demonstrating through these measures how culture can be used not only as an artistic expression, but also as a social force. By investing in infrastructure, supporting projects, and involving the population in the planning of major events, the city is laying the foundation for a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable cultural policy. The preparations for 2029 are not only a look back at history, but also a forward-looking perspective on Nordhorn’s future as a culturally attractive place.
