Mobility in Langenhagen: Road Construction, Cycling Friendliness, and School Route Safety in March 2026
In March 2026, mobility was the focus in Langenhagen: Large-scale road repairs, the initiative for certification as a "Cycling-Friendly Community Niedersachsen," and improvements in school route safety illustrate forward-looking traffic policy in the region.
Mobility and Infrastructure in Langenhagen: Repairs, Safety, and Future Visions
Mobility in Langenhagen has changed significantly in March 2026. The city has taken decisive steps toward a sustainable traffic policy aimed at improving both the safety of road users and infrastructure. From the expansion of the Brinker Straße to the redesign of the Händelstraße and measures for school route safety – the topics reflect a broad spectrum of challenges and solutions.
Road Repairs: Brinker Straße and Händelstraße in Focus
The Brinker Straße between the eastern town entrance and the Kapellenstraße was one of the central topics in politics. At a length of around 440 meters, the street is in a structural condition that urgently requires renovation. Existing longitudinal and transverse cracks, patchwork repairs, and subsidence endanger traffic safety. The construction includes not only surface repairs but also the expansion of sidewalks to 2.50 meters, barrier-free redesign of bus stops, and the installation of bicycle parking racks. The cost of this measure amounts to around 2.065 million euros, with funds planned for the financial years 2028 or 2029.
In parallel, the expansion of the Händelstraße between Bachstraße and Wendehammer was decided. The Händelstraße will be converted into a traffic-calmed area with a mixed-use surface, including new sidewalks, planting islands, and parking spaces. The cost of the measure is approximately 312,000 euros, to be financed from the municipal budget. Implementation is planned for 2027.
Cycling Friendliness as a Goal: Certification and Action Plan
Another focus was on promoting cycling. The council motion from BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN to certify the city of Langenhagen as a "Cycling-Friendly Community Niedersachsen" was taken up. The administration was tasked with creating an action plan by October 2025, including concrete actions, cost estimates, and prioritizations. The aim is to learn from the experience of already certified municipalities and to sustainably improve the cycling infrastructure.
Another project discussed in March is the establishment of a gravel cycle path extending from the Leibnizstraße. The motion from SPD and BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN aims to make the school route safer for cyclists. The cost of constructing a gravel surface is to be determined to create a safe connection between Virchowstraße and Theodor-Heuss-Straße.
School Route Safety and Traffic Safety in Residential Areas
In addition to cycling friendliness, traffic safety issues were also in the public spotlight. The SPD municipal council faction from Kaltenweide succeeded in passing a unanimous motion to improve traffic safety at the intersection of Eichengrund / Am Weiherfeld. The view onto the street Am Weiherfeld is severely restricted by vegetation and distribution cabinets, which is particularly problematic for students. The administration was tasked with examining solutions such as traffic mirrors.
Furthermore, the city council of Langenhagen has been tasked with submitting a detailed time and detour plan for road construction sites by the end of 2025. The goal is to minimize the impact on traffic – especially in residential streets – and design detours in such a way that they do not cause excessive burdens. This is especially important in light of the long-term construction work on the Walsroder Straße, which has already led to criticism from citizens.
Outlook: Mobility as a Central Field of Action
The measures in March 2026 show that Langenhagen has clearly embarked on a course toward sustainable and safe mobility. The repair of roads, the promotion of cycling, and the improvement of traffic safety in residential areas are not only practical steps – they are also expressions of a long-term vision aimed at climate protection, barrier-free access, and quality of life.
In the coming months, it will be crucial how this vision is implemented in practice. The creation of the action plan for certification as a "Cycling-Friendly Community Niedersachsen" as well as the implementation of construction measures in the Brinker and Händelstraße are key milestones on this path. Langenhagen is showing that it is ready to take on the challenges of the mobility transition – and to keep not only the infrastructure, but also the everyday lives of its citizens in mind.
