Culture and Community in Hannover – An Overview of Cultural Developments in February 2026
In February 2026, cultural promotion, security, and integration were at the center of attention in Hannover. Numerous decisions made by the Cultural Committee and other bodies show how the city is strengthening its cultural identity while at the same time promoting social participation and security.
Culture and Community in Hannover: How the City Shapes Cultural Policy in February 2026
Culture in Hannover is not only a reflection of the city's history, but also a central building block for social cohesion and identity formation. In February 2026, the Cultural Committee devoted particular attention to the city's cultural future – from the support of young artists to security concepts and integration measures.
Dance Promotion and Sustainability: A Long-Term Cultural Policy Approach
The 2026 dance funding is an example of a cultural policy strategy that places both artistic quality and sustainability in the foreground. The city of Hannover will strengthen the dance scene with a total of 85,800 euros. Particularly noteworthy is the basic funding of 20,000 euros for Mónica García Vicente, which will run for three years and thus create stability. In addition, 16,000 euros from the previous year were reallocated to continue projects that are already in the pilot phase.
The jury makes decisions based on clear artistic criteria, with sustainability being a mandatory part of the application. This shows that the city of Hannover does not align its cultural promotion solely with short-term effects, but also with long-term responsibility.
Studio and Project Funding: Space for Creativity and Talent Development
With a total funding of 181,800 euros, Hannover supports its local creative scene. A total of 61 studio applications and 10 project spaces were funded, with the criteria of quality, talent development, public engagement, and sustainability being in the foreground. The funding is gender-neutral – a step toward greater diversity in the artistic landscape.
The high number of applications (77) shows that the city of Hannover has a vibrant cultural and creative scene that is characterized by diverse formats and structures. At the same time, the recommendations of the dance jury show that there is still potential for improvement – especially in the structure of project funding, which is currently significantly lower than in the theater sector.
Security and Integration: How Cultural Offers Strengthen Social Participation
In addition to the promotion of artistic projects, issues of security and integration were also in the focus of the committee meeting. The city plans to expand the municipal order service with up to 100 additional positions and modernize video surveillance. At the same time, a communication campaign "Hannover – na sicher!" is being launched, which addresses the topics of feeling of security, integration, and diversity.
Another important topic was the integration of refugees and migrants. The city supports integration courses, vocational language courses, and neighborhood courses, while also advancing the digitization of the naturalization process. In addition, street social work will be expanded with 4.5 additional positions to better reach people in the city.
Night Culture and Public Space: Cooperation Instead of Conflict
The night culture in Hannover is gaining a new structure with the establishment of a Night Council. The Night Council is intended to bring together representatives of the night culture and the city administration to jointly develop solutions for peaceful and safe celebration. At the same time, the city center is being revitalized through cultural offerings such as the "Summer Lounge" at the Andreas-Hermes-Platz – in cooperation with social organizations and cultural institutions.
These measures show that Hannover is not only relying on security, but also on a lively, open, and inclusive night culture. Public spaces are actively used and shaped by cultural formats.
Conclusion: Hannover as a Culturally Vibrant and Safe City
In February 2026, the Cultural Committee made it clear that Hannover is consciously supporting a wide range of cultural formats – from dance to studios and night culture. At the same time, security and integration are being integrated into the cultural policy strategy. The city thus pursues a holistic approach that not only strengthens artistic freedom, but also social and cultural participation.
In the coming months, it will be exciting to observe how the new funding programs and structures will prove themselves in practice – and whether they can position Hannover even more strongly as a cultural metropolis with open spaces and strong values.
