Sports Policy in Braunschweig: Funding, Projects, and Awards in February 2026
In February 2026, the Braunschweig Sports Committee set new directions for supporting sports clubs, developing social projects, and honoring athletic achievements. An overview of the most important decisions and background information.
Funding: Subsidies for 72 Sports Associations in the Millions
The Braunschweig Sports Committee decided in February 2026 to support 72 local sports associations with a total grant of €524,374.42. This amount is an advance payment of 50% of the dynamically adjusted grant for 2026, with the dynamic adjustment rate at 3.45%. The associations receive these funds for operational and maintenance costs, with new conditions such as a minimum annual membership fee (€140 for adults, €70 for children) introduced.
Some associations, such as BTSV Eintracht von 1895 e.V., benefit from support for rented premises in Schimmelhof and Wilhelmstraße. At the same time, F.C. Sportfreunde 1920 Rautheim e.V. will receive a new sports function building without a buyout, which can be seen as an investment in the future of the club. In contrast, the Schützenverein Watenbüttel von 1903 e.V. will no longer receive a grant due to the closure of the small-caliber shooting range.
Social Integration Through Sports: The Project "Life Chances through Sports"
Another important topic for the Sports Committee was the "Lebenschancen durch Sport" ("Life Chances through Sports") project by VfB Rot-Weiß 04 Braunschweig e.V. Here, the association will receive an advance of €28,000 for the first six months of 2026 to offer movement and health promotion for children and young people in disadvantaged districts.
The project aims at promoting development in motor, socio-emotional, and cognitive areas and seeks to prevent obesity. The project costs amount to €112,000, with half financed by municipal funds and the other half by third-party funds and contributions from the association. The advance will be paid in two installments: €14,000 for January to March and €14,000 for April to June 2026.
Awards and Transparency Issues: The Braunschweig Sports Medal
In addition to funding and project development, the awarding of the Braunschweig Sports Medal was also in focus. This award is regularly given for outstanding achievements in sports or voluntary work. The selection of awardees is jointly carried out by the municipal sports administration and the Braunschweig Sports Federation (SSB).
However, questions regarding transparency were raised, particularly by the Bündnis 90 – DIE GRÜNEN faction. They asked about the composition of the selection committee, the selection criteria, and the possibility of actively involving sports associations in the nomination process. The lack of written information on the awarding principles shows that there is still room for improvement.
Outlook: Sports Policy as a Key to Integration and Development
The decisions of the Braunschweig Sports Committee in February 2026 show how multifaceted the role of sports is in urban society. From financial support for associations through social projects to awards for special achievements – sports is a decisive factor for integration, health, and identity.
In the future, it will be important to further examine funding models, create transparency in selection processes, and strengthen the breadth of sporting activities in Braunschweig. The Sports Committee has given important impetus with the current measures – and thus also laid the foundation for a sports policy development that is both inclusive and sustainable.
