In February 2026, Braunschweig demonstrated its forward-thinking approach through investments in sport, education, and culture. In addition, important decisions were made in the areas of finances, mobility, and integration. Here is the monthly review.

Future in Motion: Braunschweig Invests in Sport, Culture and Education

  • Sports clubs receive 524,374 € in funding – 72 clubs benefit from interim payments.
  • New primary school Querum with a budget of 46.2 million euros is well underway.
  • Women's City Plan will be published as a website, app, and printed version by June 2026.
  • Children's Holiday Card will be reviewed until May 2026 – parents take note!
  • Flood damage 2023 will be supported with 1.02 million euros from the state and the city.
  • Funding for studios and project spaces up to 5,000 euros per application.

Investments in Sport and Leisure: Braunschweig is Preparing for the Future

February was a month of clear impulses for the sports and leisure sector. The city provided 524,374.42 euros in interim payments to 72 sports clubs – that is 50% of the dynamic grant. The funding was increased by 3.45% and rounded up to the full 100 euros, which has a positive effect on club activities.

In addition, the funding project "Life Opportunities through Sport" is supported with 28,000 euros, and the lease for the sports facility Mascherode has been extended until 2029. At the leisure sports facility Bärenkamp, 310,000 euros will be used to build a new dirt bike track and a 3x3 basketball court – a project that will appeal to both youth and sports enthusiasts.

Culture and Education: Braunschweig is Building Bridges to the Future

The city remains active in the education sector: The new primary school Querum is planned with a budget of 46.228 million euros and is expected to be completed in 2028/29. The sports hall will follow in 2030. In addition, it was decided to plan a youth and children's center B 58100,000 euros from the double budget are available for this.

Another highlight is the Women's City Plan, which is to be published in digital and printed form by the Day of Lower Saxony (June 12–14, 2026). The plan contains biographical data of important Braunschweig women, contact points, restrooms, changing tables and much more – a project that strengthens equality and transparency.

In addition, an equality report for the years 2022–2024 was presented, which also includes a future, more binding training concept for managers. In addition, by May 2026 it will be examined whether the Children's Holiday Card can be implemented in Braunschweig – good news for families.

Finances and Investments: The City is Building Bridges for the Future

There were several important decisions in the budget. The city is investing 400,000 euros in the renovation of the playground Möhlkamp, with two-thirds coming from urban development funding. The Stadtbade Gliesmarode will be renovated by the Stadtbad GmbH – the reopening is planned for 2029.

In addition, 55,200 euros were allocated for the funding of studios and project spaces – with a maximum of 5,000 euros per application. For flood protection, 1.02 million euros were approved, with 80% coming from the state of Lower Saxony. The funding of the German-Polish Aid Association with 7,000 euros is also an example of support for integration projects.

Mobility and Safety: Braunschweig is Making the Streets Safer

In the traffic area, safety was strengthened: The central order service (ZOD) receives 95,000 euros for increased presence, especially on weekends. In addition, new traffic regulations in the Calvördestraße were examined, and in Rüningen and Timmerlah a bike path renovation is planned.

Bike infrastructure is also a topic: the installation of bike racks on sidewalks was rejected, but a bike course at Bärenkamp is planned. In addition, an application for W-LAN hotspots at central locations was submitted – a step towards a smart city.

Social and Integration: Braunschweig is There for Everyone

In the social area, Braunschweig has shown that it is there for everyone. The Partnership for Democracy was allocated 155,555.60 euros for 2026 – a sign of the strengthening of democracy and tolerance. However, integration courses by the Adult Education Center were canceled, which is due to the cancellation of BAMF approval for citizens of the Union.

In addition, the Stumbling Block Ordinance was updated – in the future it will be regulated as "installation of works of art" under § 16 Abs. 1 No. 8 Main Ordinance. Another project is the Stele for Helene Kiwaczynski, which will be installed in the coming weeks.

Connections: Investments, Equality and Security in a Tension Field

February has shown that Braunschweig is investing in several areas at the same time. On the one hand, sport, education and culture are being supported more, on the other hand, security in the city is being increased. At the same time, the city remains sensitive to social issues and strengthens projects such as the Women's City Plan or the Partnership for Democracy.

An interesting point is the debate on the inclusion of young people in planning processes. In the area of district councils, it is being discussed how young people can be more involved – a topic that is becoming increasingly important in other cities as well.

Conclusion and Outlook: Braunschweig Looks Ahead

February 2026 was characterized by investments in the future: in sport, education, culture and security. At the same time, the city has shown that it strengthens social and integrative projects. With the new primary school Querum, the funding of sports clubs and the implementation of the Women's City Plan, Braunschweig has made it clear that it is there for everyone – and that it is looking to the future.

In March 2026, there will be further decisions on the Women's City Plan, the Children's Holiday Card and the renovation of the public bath. Stay tuned – and stay informed.
