Construction and Urban Development: Housing and Climate Protection in Focus
In February, the Committee for Construction, Environment, Climate Protection, and Urban Development met twice, laying important groundwork for the city's development. On February 4, the construction of a residential building in Schwedenschanze was approved with the city's consent. This is a urban development agreement under § 11 BauGB, enabling the development of new housing.
On February 25, the agenda included, among other items, the amendment of the parking space regulation and the continuation of the rental price index. The new regulation allows for the exemption from buyout contributions under certain conditions. In addition, a rental price index for the years 2026/2027 was approved, to be funded in part by a state grant. The committee also discussed the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Stralsund.
Finance and Procurement: Investments in Safety and Culture
The Finance and Procurement Committee made key decisions in February regarding safety and the use of donations. At the beginning of the month, two procurement procedures were initiated: one for protective equipment for the professional fire department, and one for a rescue truck with crane. Both measures are part of the modernization of fire department equipment and contribute to public safety.
In addition, several donations to the Stralsund Music School were accepted – a total of 350 euros from two different donors. These funds will directly support cultural projects and the equipping of the music school. In the closed session, real estate transactions were also discussed, including sales on Papenstraße and in Markow.
The Finance Department will also in the future voluntarily report on remaining budget funds and propose their use by the citizens – a measure to increase transparency and participation.
Culture: Theatre and Christmas Market in Discussion
The Culture Committee made decisions on future cultural projects on February 26. In the public session, the results of the 2025 Christmas market were discussed, while in the closed session, the musical leadership of the Vorpommern Theatre and funding applications were addressed. Although no specific financial figures were announced, cultural policy in Stralsund remains in motion.
Cross-Connections: Transparency and Citizen-Oriented Politics
A recurring theme in several committees was the increase in transparency. In the future, the Finance Department will report on remaining budget funds, and various decisions – such as the approval of new buildings or the modernization of fire department equipment – have been made publicly accessible. This shows that Stralsund is taking steps toward citizen-oriented politics, with decision-making processes becoming more transparent and comprehensible.
Conclusion and Outlook
February 2026 was marked by concrete decisions in the areas of construction, finance, and culture. The city is investing in modern fire department equipment, securing cultural projects through donations, and preparing new housing areas. At the same time, Stralsund is focusing on greater transparency and citizen participation – a positive trend that allows citizens a stronger role in the city's development. In March, further topics such as the implementation of approved projects and possible budget decisions will be on the agenda.
