Culture, Finance, and New Construction: Stralsund is Moving Forward

What was important this month

  • Security measures for cultural events: The Culture Committee decided to revise security arrangements at venues such as Hansa-Wiese and to consider more aesthetically pleasing barriers in the future.
  • Financial support for the STRALSUND MUSEUM: The Finance and Grant Committee approved several donations totaling 11,150 EUR as well as a donation in kind for the museum.
  • New construction of the functional building at the Kupfermühle Stadium: An investment project worth 4.9 million EUR was approved, funded by federal funding and state funds.
  • Zoning plans for residential and commercial areas: The Building Committee decided on several plans, including residential development on Deviner Weg and the expansion of the maritime business park.

Culture: Balancing Security and Aesthetics

In April, cultural topics were in the spotlight. The Culture Committee approved a proposal to revise security arrangements at cultural event venues such as Hansa-Wiese. The currently used concrete blocks are to be replaced with more aesthetically appealing barriers. The decision was unanimously supported by the factions CDU/FDP, Alliance 90/The Greens/SPD/Pirate Party/The Party, Citizens for Stralsund/Adomeit, The Left, and Quintana Schmidt. The AfD voted against it.

In addition, there were extensive discussions about the redesign of burial grounds at the St. Jürgen Cemetery and the construction progress of the STRALSUND Museum. In the closed session, funding applications for cultural projects in 2026 were discussed.

Finance: Investments and Donations for Stralsund

Important financial decisions were made in the Finance and Grant Committee in April. One of the central decisions concerned the STRALSUND MUSEUM. Here, three donations were approved:

  • A donation in kind of 1,000 EUR according to proposal B 0002/2026.
  • A grant of 10,000 EUR from two donors: 3,000 EUR from the citizens' committee "Save the Old Town of Stralsund" e.V. and 7,000 EUR from the Herbert-Ewe Foundation for the Old Town of Stralsund (proposal B 0015/2026).
  • A further donation in kind of 150 EUR for a historical wooden object (proposal H 0015/2026).

In addition, the initiation of the procurement process for the replacement construction of the functional building at the Kupfermühle Stadium was approved. The total costs amount to around 4.9 million EUR, funded by a budget allocation of 2.7 million EUR, 2.2 million EUR in federal funding, and 1 million EUR in special needs allocation from the state.

Urban Development: Zoning Plans and Infrastructure

The Committee for Construction, Environment, Climate Protection, and Urban Development intensively addressed the urban development of Stralsund. Particularly noteworthy is the draft decision on the zoning plan "Residential Development on Deviner Weg," which allows the construction of five multi-family houses on an area of 5.02 hectares. In addition, the third amendment to the zoning plan "Maritime Business Park Franzenshöhe" was approved to enable the construction of another shipbuilding hall.

Another focal point was the zoning plan "SWS Energy Park," which was adopted as a regulation. This project includes 88,447 m² of compensation area for compensatory measures.

Cross-Cutting Topics: Budget Planning and Sustainability

A central topic was also the budget planning. The Finance Committee approved the 2026 budget regulation, which includes an additional need of 914,000 EUR for the Maritime Industrial and Business Park "Volkswerft." In addition, it was decided to increase the district tax by 1.2 million EUR, while payments under the KiFöG will be reduced by 2.2 million EUR. These steps show how Stralsund is responding to financial uncertainties and setting priorities.

There were also developments in education policy. The Committee for Education, Higher Education, and Digitalization discussed the current status of the University of Stralsund and the Ernst-von-Haselberg School as well as the 2026 school enrollments. In addition, a motion was submitted to examine the introduction of a youth advisory board.

Conclusion with Outlook

April 2026 in Stralsund was marked by clear decisions in the areas of culture, finance, and urban development. The city is investing in cultural institutions, securing important infrastructure projects, and planning for the future. In particular, the financial support for the STRALSUND MUSEUM and the new construction of the Kupfermühle Stadium show how Stralsund is strengthening its identity and preparing for the future.

In the coming weeks, further details on the approved projects will be announced, particularly regarding the security measures at cultural event venues and the construction plans for residential and commercial areas. The city of Stralsund is moving forward with a clear vision and financial planning.
