Culture and Community in Rostock: Focus on Community Projects and Gender Equality Work in February 2026

In February 2026, several topics from the field of culture and community once again took center stage in Rostock. Particularly notable were the preparations for the 17th Easter Fire in Dierkow-Ost and the debate surrounding the Gender Equality Action Plan 2025–2027. Additionally, the popular Repair Café is searching for new premises. This blog provides an overview of the most important decisions, discussions, and background information.

Culture and Community in Rostock: Recent Developments

Culture and community are not only topics for cultural festivals or museum visits in Rostock but also central political tasks. In February 2026, several projects and discussions were in the spotlight, highlighting the city's role as a driving force in cultural and social matters. Particularly noteworthy are the preparations for the Easter Fire, the debate around the Gender Equality Action Plan, and the search for new premises for the Repair Café.

Preparations for the 17th Easter Fire in Dierkow-Ost

On April 4, 2026, the traditional Easter Fire will be celebrated in Dierkow-Ost – a festival deeply rooted in local community life. On February 3, the Local Advisory Board of Dierkow-Ost met to discuss the preparations. The event is a project entirely driven by volunteer work and civic engagement.

The Local Advisory Board unanimously approved a grant from the local advisory board budget in the amount of 1,000 euros. These funds are necessary to finance equipment such as gas cylinders, party tents, power generators, and flyers. The cost plan is part of the application, and an organizing working group has been formed. The first meeting has already taken place, with further meetings planned for March.

The city of Rostock is being asked for the free provision of the site, which has always been granted in the past. The event is not only a cultural highlight but also an important element of social integration and community cohesion.

Gender Equality Work: Action Plan 2025–2027 and Controversies

On February 5, 2026, the Gender Equality Action Plan 2025–2027 was at the center of the Cultural Committee. Rostock has been part of the EU Charter for Equality between Women and Men at Local Level since 2017 and has been implementing the agreements since then. The current action plan is part of this commitment.

However, there were clear discussions and amendment proposals in the committee, indicating some skepticism towards certain measures. Among other things, mandatory training on gender-sensitive language was removed, as well as the PR campaign against stereotypes. The argument was that such measures are either not effective or do not fall within the responsibility of the municipal administration.

Another point of contention was the introduction of a Gender Equality Committee, which was removed from the original action plan. The justification: existing committees and the city's designated officer for gender equality already cover sufficient areas. The gender-related aspects in urban planning ("Gender Planning") were also critically viewed, with the argument that decisions on urban development should be based on political majorities and public opinion, rather than gender-sensitive standards.

Meanwhile, Gender Budgeting – as a financial policy tool for gender-equitable budgeting – was considered too bureaucratic and removed from the plan. The debate shows how complex gender equality work is in practice and how strongly it is subject to political and financial constraints.

Repair Café: Search for New Premises

Another highlight of the Cultural Committee was the report on the Repair Café, which has been operated voluntarily at the Societät on A.-Bebel-Straße since 2014. With over 3,000 repaired devices and a saving of 6.3 tons of electronic waste, the Repair Café is a model project for sustainability and community work. However, the lease agreement expired on December 31, 2025, and the café is now looking for new premises in the city center.

The Culture Office is leading the search for alternatives, and it is being examined whether rooms at the RIGZ or other municipal buildings can be made available. A new decision in the form of a new resolution is not currently required, as the project remains voluntary and does not require new funding. Nevertheless, the future of the Repair Café is uncertain, and the city will have to decide whether it wants to continue supporting this social and ecological project.

Conclusion: Community Work Remains Central, but Also Under Scrutiny

February 2026 has shown that in Rostock, cultural and social projects continue to play a central role – whether through the Easter Fire, the Repair Café, or gender equality work. At the same time, it becomes clear that political decisions are not always straightforward. The discussions surrounding the Gender Equality Action Plan show that even well-intentioned initiatives can be affected by bureaucracy, resource shortages, and political differences.

The future will show whether Rostock is able to secure these projects in the long term – especially in times when civic engagement and political support are equally important.
