Traffic Policy in Graal-Müritz: Modernization, Safety, and Sustainability in Focus

In April 2026, traffic policy was at the center of attention in Graal-Müritz. The municipality decided on measures for energy efficiency, safety, and infrastructure development. The focus was on the conversion of street lighting, the designation of new streets, and the renovation of drainage systems.

Traffic Policy in Graal-Müritz: Modernization, Safety, and Sustainability in Focus

Mobility and traffic are central pillars for the quality of life and economic strength of a municipality. In Graal-Müritz, April 2026 marked the implementation of concrete measures in traffic policy that are both environmentally friendly and safety-oriented. The Committee for Water, Roads and Pathways, Order, Safety, and Traffic made decisions that will have a lasting impact on the community's infrastructure.

Conversion to LED Lighting: Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

The conversion of 115 lampposts in the Koppenheide residential area to energy-efficient LED technology was a central decision in April. This measure, which had already been requested in 2021 but could not be implemented at the time, is now being realized. The goal is to reduce CO₂ emissions, limit greenhouse gases, and improve light pollution and insect-friendly light protection.

The costs of variant 3, which was ultimately approved, amount to 140,114.77 €. As these are not included in the 2026 budget, a supplementary budget is required. However, with subsidies of at least 45%, the implementation is financially feasible. This conversion is not only a step toward climate protection but also a financial benefit for the municipality through long-term cost savings.

Street Designation: Foundation for Safety and Liability

Another focus was the public designation of the streets Buhnenweg, Forellenweg, and Sanddornweg. This measure is necessary to make the streets accessible to general vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The designation is carried out as municipal roads according to § 3 No. 3b of the MV Road Act and enables the municipality to pass on costs such as street cleaning to the adjacent property owners.

The streets are located in the cadastral area of Müritz, Flur 1, and were unanimously approved on March 10, 2026, with 7 yes votes. The designation includes roadways, sidewalks, and parking areas and is part of a long-term planning effort to keep infrastructure in rural areas safe and usable.

Safety through Structural Adjustments: Removal of a Road Narrowing

In the street "Zur Seebrücke," a road narrowing was removed. This narrowing, which was previously created by planted areas and flower pots, was considered risky and obstructed traffic. Two similar narrowings in the same street had already been removed, indicating a sensitive awareness of safety in the municipality.

The decision was made with 6 yes votes and one abstention. The measure was carried out within the available funds of the current fiscal year. The removal contributes to the prevention of collision accidents and improves traffic flow.

Renovation of the Moorgraben Pumping Station: Challenges and Preparations

Another important topic was the planning and renovation of the Moorgraben pumping station and the adjustment of outlets in the drainage system. This measure is necessary to ensure the drainage function within the municipality. Challenges include unclear pipeline routes, ownership relationships, and coordination with third parties such as the MEDIAN Clinic.

Nordwasser prefers a free-flow system, with rectangular profiles or smaller pipes considered in light of free-flow. The cost coverage by Nordwasser is still not fully clarified. The measures also include the planning of culverts, existing condition surveys, and research into documents. Cooperation with WastraPlan and the Water and Soil Association is central to the success of the project.

Outlook: Sustainability and Safety as Central Guiding Principles

The traffic policy in Graal-Müritz shows how municipalities can implement sustainable and safe solutions with limited resources. The conversion to LED lighting is a milestone in climate policy, the designation of streets creates legal clarity, and the removal of narrowings increases traffic safety.

In the further course of the year, it will be important to successfully implement the planned measures and ensure the necessary funding. Coordination with regional partners such as Nordwasser and the MEDIAN Clinic remains central. Graal-Müritz is emerging as a pioneer in the combination of climate protection, safety, and infrastructure development.
