Youth Policy in Graal-Müritz: Challenges and Perspectives in February 2026
In February 2026, Graal-Müritz experienced personnel changes and structural challenges in youth work. The Committee for Youth, Education, Sport, Culture, Social Affairs, Seniors, and Housing discussed the succession of the youth social worker and the future of youth participation.
Personnel Transitions and New Perspectives
In February 2026, Nicole Szyja concluded her role as youth social worker in Graal-Müritz. Her departure on 28.02.2026 marked a significant shift in the municipality’s youth work. It had already been clear that a large number of applicants were available for the replacement position, with some ready for deployment as of 01.03.2026. The municipality and Rostock District have secured the funding for the position, ensuring continuous support for young people.
During the meeting of the Committee for Youth, Education, Sport, Culture, Social Affairs, Seniors, and Housing on 19.02.2026, the community aimed to achieve professional alignment between the municipality, the district, and independent organizations. The goal was to incorporate practical experiences, discuss the needs of young people, and debate the framework conditions for future youth social work.
Structural Deficits and Participation Challenges
Despite a stabilized financial foundation, youth work in Graal-Müritz continues to face structural shortcomings. Outdoor facilities at the youth club are lacking, which would otherwise naturally attract young people. Moreover, the youth club’s offerings are not being utilized sufficiently by young people. This issue is perceived as critical in the community, as it reduces the attractiveness of the youth facility.
Another challenge is the low level of youth participation in political and social processes. The youth advisory board, intended to serve as a link between young people and the municipal administration, is currently inactive. Attempts to re-establish it have not yet been successful. Likewise, the state law on youth participation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has not yet led to sustainable involvement.
Perspectives and Future Steps
The municipality of Graal-Müritz emphasizes the need to further develop youth work and introduce new impulses. This includes not only personnel changes, but also the creation of better facilities and activities that appeal to young people. The new youth social worker will be closely accompanied and supported to ensure a smooth transition and continuous youth support.
The student transportation system will also be reviewed in the coming months. Rostock District has added new bus connections, including a new route departing Graal-Müritz at 06:51 a.m. The municipality is assessing whether the capacity is permanently sufficient and whether punctuality in the morning school traffic is guaranteed.
In summary: Youth work in Graal-Müritz faces challenges, but also opportunities. The personnel replacement, the revision of housing allocation guidelines, and the planned re-establishment of the youth advisory board are steps toward stronger youth participation and more sustainable youth work.
