Offenbach's Cultural and Community Policy in February 2026: From Museum Realignment to Cultural Planning

In February 2026, Offenbach engaged intensively with the future of its cultural infrastructure. With the German Leather Museum, the Waldzoo, and the planning of a Cultural Development Plan as central topics, the city focused on strengthening itself as a culturally attractive center.

Offenbach's Cultural and Community Policy in February 2026: An Overview

In February 2026, Offenbach engaged intensively with the future of its cultural and community structures in several meetings of the Committee for Culture, Education, Sports, and Twinning, as well as the City Council. The discussions included the renovation of historical institutions, the creation of a Cultural Development Plan, and measures to strengthen local community life. These decisions reflect not only a cultural ambition but also a clear strategic orientation of the city to position itself as a livable and future-ready center.

The German Leather Museum – A Milestone on the Path to Realignment

The renovation and re-conceptualization of the German Leather Museum in Offenbach marks a milestone in the city’s cultural policy. With a total budget of 42.6 million euros, funded by federal and state funds as well as credit market funds, the museum is to be transformed into a modern operation. The goal is to enable barrier-free accessibility and to present the exhibits under optimal climatic conditions.

The winning design of the competition was developed by architects Rustler/Schriever for the buildings and Levin Monsigny for the open spaces. The City Council has passed the preliminary decision, and the Letter of Intent with the state is in the final coordination process. Planning is currently in Phases 1 and 2 and will be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2026 with a cost estimate.

The Waldzoo Offenbach – Expansion and Future Security

The Waldzoo Offenbach, which in close cooperation with the Department of Public Order and the Offenbach Fire Department takes in wild animals, will receive a significant expansion this year. With an area that will be made available to the operator free of charge, and a construction cost subsidy of up to 500,000 euros, the zoo will be further developed as an educational and leisure facility.

In addition, the annual subsidy for the zoo will be increased in a staggered manner until 2035. The expansion and funding are supported on the condition that the operation continues at the current level and quality. In the future, the operation will be taken over by the newly founded association "Offenbacher Waldzoo e.V.", following the recognition of its public benefit status.

Cultural Development Plan – A Vision for Offenbach’s Cultural Future

Another central point was the creation of a Cultural Development Plan for Offenbach. The motion, jointly submitted by the SPD, B’90/The Greens, and the FDP, envisions a comprehensive planning process based on data on the city’s cultural landscape and includes broad participation by cultural workers, institutions, experts, and citizens.

Key focal points of the plan are "Culture of Cultures", "Places for Culture", "Future of Independent Cultural Institutions", and "Culture and Digitality". The goal is to strengthen the cultural scene, promote networking, and close gaps in the cultural offer. With this plan, Offenbach makes a political commitment to art and culture, which is also intended to improve the quality of life and attractiveness of the city.

Rejection of Game Tables in Park Areas – A Misguided Integration Approach?

A motion discussed in February 2026 proposed the installation of game tables in Offenbach’s park areas to promote cross-cultural encounters. Such game tables, which exist in cities like New York or Düsseldorf, allow people from different cultures to come into contact through shared board games. Although the motion received broad support from society, it was ultimately rejected by a majority vote. This shows that integration approaches in Offenbach do not always find an open ear – even if they seem perfectly reasonable.

Outlook: Offenbach as a Culturally Attractive Center

The decisions of February 2026 mark a clear turning point in Offenbach’s cultural and community policy. With the realignment of the German Leather Museum, the expansion of the Waldzoo, and the creation of a Cultural Development Plan, the city is pursuing a long-term, integrative, and future-oriented strategy. Although not all initiatives received approval – such as the rejection of the game tables – it is evident that Offenbach is ready to invest in culture and community. These investments will not only enrich the city’s cultural landscape but also strengthen the quality of life and identity of its citizens.
