Inaugural Session and New Committees

On April 23, 2026, the first session of the newly elected City Council took place. This marks a milestone in Offenbach's democratic structure, as the elected representatives now begin their work. In this session, it was unanimously decided to establish four committees for the electoral period from 2026 to 2031:

  • Main, Finance, Digitization, and Participation Committee,
  • Committee for Environment, Urban Planning, and Transport,
  • Committee for Social Affairs and Integration,
  • Committee for Culture, Education, Sports, and Twinning Partnerships.

The establishment of these committees shows how Offenbach is actively shaping the future – with clear responsibilities in the areas of finance, environment, social affairs, and culture.

Seat Distribution and Committee Responsibilities

The seats in the committees were allocated according to the nomination procedure under § 62 (2) HGO. Each committee consists of 14 members, and the distribution was based on the party representation in the City Council. Deputy Chair Malsy announced the seat distribution as follows:

  • SPD: 5 seats
  • CDU: 3 seats
  • B’90/The Greens and The Left: 2 seats each
  • FDP and FW-Volt: 1 seat each

An especially important role is held by the Main, Finance, Digitization, and Participation Committee, which also functions as the Pre-Election Committee and Document Access Committee. This dual function underlines the strategic importance of this committee.

Formal Decisions and Legal Foundations

In addition to the establishment of the committees, formal decisions were also made. These include the election of the Chair of the City Council, the two secretaries, and the continuation of the rules of procedure.

Furthermore, the validity of the election of the City Council and the Foreigners Advisory Board under §§ 25 and 58 Local Election Act (KWG) was reviewed. These steps are necessary to ensure the smooth operation of the new mandates and to secure the legal foundations.
