The debates and resolutions of the local advisory committees and the Committee for Mobility and Smart City illustrate how the city is aligning itself with a sustainable and traffic-calmed future. At the center were the expansion and safety of public transport, the expansion of cycling infrastructure, and measures to improve road safety.

Expansion and safety in public transport

The Comprehensive Rail Traffic Plan 2035+ was unanimously adopted – a milestone for the long-term planning of rail traffic in Frankfurt. However, the proposal for a river tram as a pilot project failed, indicating resistance in the political landscape.

Frankfurt is also strongly committed to the expansion of cycling infrastructure. For example, safe bicycle paths along the Sossenheimer Weg to Sossenheim station were approved. In addition, more bicycle racks are to be installed in various districts, especially in front of churches and at bus stops. In the western part of Frankfurt, e-scooter parking areas have been newly established, indicating a growing demand for alternative modes of transport.

Improvements were also approved for pedestrians. For example, zebra crossings at several schools and kindergartens have been made safer, and speed bumps at intersections are intended to reduce vehicle speeds. Particular mention should be made of road safety in Fürstenbergerstraße, where a new barrier-free route for the school journey was approved.

Parking and traffic management

In the area of parking and traffic management, there were both restrictions and relaxations. Parking bans for trucks and Sprinters were approved in several districts to improve traffic flow and safety. At the same time, two-way parking was reintroduced on Kolpingstraße in Nied, taking local needs into account.

Another politically controversial project was the redevelopment of Riedbergplatz with a focus on de-sealing and more green spaces. In addition, a Park-and-Ride concept with priority for the Taunusblick was approved to pick up commuters and relieve inner-city traffic.

Communication and citizen participation

The city of Frankfurt is increasingly emphasizing citizen participation in transport projects. For example, it was stipulated that transport planning in district 10 should be publicly presented and discussed. In addition, a report on transparent communication in transport measures was unanimously adopted, showing that the city is placing a strong emphasis on transparency in the municipal process.
