Mobility Developments in Hamburg-Nord: Focus on Safety, Cycling, and 30 km/h Zones

In March 2026, Hamburg-Nord focused on a range of measures to improve road safety, promote cycling, and expand 30 km/h zones. The regional committees of Langenhorn-Fuhlsbüttel-Ohlsdorf-Alsterdorf-Groß Borstel and Eppendorf-Winterhude intensively addressed topics such as school route safety, bicycle streets, and parking concepts.

Mobility Developments in Hamburg-Nord: Safety, 30 km/h Zones, and Cycling

In March 2026, the district of Hamburg-Nord engaged with a variety of measures aimed at improving urban mobility. Particular emphasis was placed on pedestrian safety—especially for children—the expansion of cycling infrastructure, and the extension of 30 km/h zones. These developments highlight the strong political focus on sustainability and road safety in the northern part of the city.

Safety for Children: 30 km/h Zones and Safe Crossings

One of the central topics in the region was the improvement of school route safety. The proposal by Carsten Redlich (Greens) to extend the 30 km/h zone on Alsterdorfer Straße between Sengelmannstraße and Bodelschwinghstraße was discussed multiple times. The goal is to reduce vehicle speeds in order to mitigate accident risks, noise pollution, and emissions.

In addition, a proposal was submitted for the installation of a signal-controlled crossing (traffic lights/pedestrian zone) or at least a zebra crossing on Alsterdorfer Straße. The existing central island between two school locations is considered insufficient. The police and the district office are to assess and implement the proposal.

Other locations, such as the intersection of Hohe Liedt and Fritz-Schumacher-Allee, also saw calls for improved traffic safety for elementary school children. In particular, parking in too close proximity to the intersection was seen as a risk. One suggestion was to shift the parking spaces 5 meters toward Tangstedter Landstraße.

Promoting Cycling and Bicycle Streets

Promoting cycling in Hamburg-Nord is another key topic. In the Stübeheide area, the first planning draft for cycling promotion was presented. Engineering firms are working on the planning, with an overview map and site plans being made available. The goal is to make cycling safer and more attractive.

The Rathenaustraße was also discussed in March. The proposal to redesign the street into a bicycle street generated broad interest. Residents expressed concerns that traffic might be diverted onto neighboring streets. Therefore, it was emphasized that local residents should be involved to find compromises.

30 km/h Zones and Parking Concepts

Alongside the expansion of 30 km/h zones, parking concepts were also in focus. In Jarrestraße, a proposed buffer strip marking was suggested to better protect cyclists and pedestrians. Critics argued that the planned 50 cm wide strips were insufficient and that a minimum width of 75 cm was recommended.

In connection with the renaming of the Traute-Lafrenz Bridge (formerly "Hindenburg Bridge"), attention was also drawn to signage. Although more than 20 street signs were equipped with additional plates, there were calls for a separate sign to indicate the new bridge name.

Outlook: Sustainable Mobility as a Central Project

The developments in Hamburg-Nord show that mobility and safety are closely linked. The expansion of 30 km/h zones, the promotion of cycling, and the securing of school routes are key steps toward a more sustainable and child-friendly city. In the coming months, further discussions on the implementation of these measures and potential pilot projects are likely to take place.
