Social Security and Housing in Wandsbek – April 2026 in Focus

In April 2026, the Social Committee in Wandsbek intensively addressed the provision of medical care in Steilshoop, the strengthening of democratic structures, and the promotion of social participation. This in-depth blog analyzes the most important decisions, background, and consequences.

Social Security and Housing in Wandsbek: April 2026

April 2026 was an intense month for the district of Wandsbek in terms of social policy. The Social Committee focused on urgent issues related to medical care, the strengthening of democratic civil society, and the promotion of inclusion and social participation. In the session on April 20, numerous motions and reports were discussed, which have the potential to significantly influence the social landscape of Wandsbek.

Medical Care in Steilshoop: An Alarmingly Critical Situation

Ensuring medical and pharmaceutical care in Steilshoop was a central topic. Since the summer of 2025, the existence-threatening risks to pharmacy supply had already been discussed in several committees and regional groups. In the current session, it was unanimously concluded that the situation is "alarming." The CDU faction urgently called on the owner of the shopping center to create solutions for practice spaces and interim measures. In addition, the committee suggested considering the establishment of municipal MVZ (Multi-Versorgungszentren – multi-care centers) or LGZ (Lebenshilfezentren – life assistance centers) as well as community health nurses as short-term measures.

The Steilshoop district conference had already highlighted the risk to accessibility for elderly and mobility-impaired individuals. A temporary relocation of doctors to the shopping center seems no longer feasible, and the Senate has not yet finalized any plans for a container-based solution. Residents are also calling for a barrier-free bridge across Gründgensstraße and an improvement in public transport connections.

Inclusion and Social Participation: Playgrounds, Mentorships, and Senior Care

Another important topic was the promotion of inclusion. A motion by the CDU faction proposed the installation of a wheelchair-accessible carousel at the Borchertring playground. The goal is to provide an inclusive play option for children with disabilities, as no comparable facility exists in the area at the moment. The project is estimated to cost around 36,500 euros, and the funds are to be provided from the Inclusion Fund.

In addition, a motion to establish reading mentorships for children in Wandsbek was discussed. The committee criticized the School, Family, and Vocational Training Authority for not having adequately reviewed the motion. Instead, the committee requested a complete overview of all reading promotion initiatives in the district as well as a needs analysis. The establishment of a coordination office "Reading Mentors Wandsbek" was proposed as a possible solution.

Several community initiatives for senior citizens were supported, including day trips to Glückstadt, excursions to the Lüneburger Heide, and the "Open Singing" event by the Friends' Association for Senior Care in Berne. The goal is to foster social contacts and combat loneliness. Special needs such as mobility restrictions and financial difficulties were also taken into account.

Strengthening Democracy: Program "Democracy in Action!" and Combating Racism

Another focus was on strengthening democratic civil society. The committee supported a motion to ensure funding for the federal program "Democracy in Action!" and the International Weeks against Racism 2026. Launched in response to the NSU murders in 2014, the program supports projects against racism, antisemitism, and antigypsyism. In Hamburg, local partners such as the Anne Frank Educational Center or HateAid are involved, and the district assembly called for the establishment of a funding pool in the upcoming two-year budget.

The SPD faction, The Greens, and the FDP faction submitted an amendment motion asking the responsible authority to advocate on the federal level for the continuation and strengthening of the program. In addition, the district administration should send experts to Social Committee meetings to report on local partnerships.

Outlook: What Comes After April?

The decisions made in April 2026 show that Wandsbek is actively addressing social challenges. Ensuring medical care in Steilshoop remains a central issue on the political agenda. At the same time, the district is committed to inclusion and democratic structures. The next steps lie in the implementation of the adopted measures and monitoring whether the objectives are achieved.

In May 2026, further discussions on the accessibility of healthcare providers are likely, particularly regarding the planned renovation agreement with the shopping center. In addition, the continuation of the program "Democracy in Action!" and the development of new federal funding guidelines will come into focus.
