Bergedorf in April 2026: Urban Development, Culture and Social Security in Focus

In April 2026, Bergedorf saw decisive steps in urban planning, social security, and cultural development. The Urban Development Committee laid the groundwork for the Magistralen 2040+ Master Plan, while the Committee for Social Affairs and Integration made key decisions regarding street social work. The Cultural Committee approved an information plaque for the KörberHaus, and the Youth Welfare Committee advocated for greater financial security for youth work.

Urban Development and Future Visions

Masterplan Magistralen 2040+ – Step Toward an Accessible City

In April 2026, the Urban Development Committee began discussions on the Magistralen 2040+ Master Plan. The goal of the project is to transform Magistrale 8 in Bergedorf into a lively, barrier-free, and green public space. The B5, one of the central traffic axes, will appear less imposing, and new crossings, green spaces, and recreational areas will be created.

Another highlight was the redesign of the Fleetplatz in Neuallermöhe, where the design by the landscape architecture firm A24 Landschaft was selected. The design is now in the preliminary design phase and is being coordinated with the public and the business community.

In addition, a process framework for the future use of the Körber site was approved, running until September 2026 and including, among other things, an idea workshop, an administrative workshop, and finally a competition process starting in October 2026.

Housing in Bergedorf: 35% Subsidized Housing

Within the framework of the Housing Alliance for Hamburg, it was decided that in construction projects with at least 30 residential units, 35% of the additional residential units must be built in the subsidized housing sector in the future. The goal is to create 10,000 approved housing units per year, including 3,000 social housing units. The initiative "cost-reduced construction" also enables cost savings of up to 2,000 euros gross per square meter of living space.

Social Security and Inclusion

Ensuring Street Social Work for the Homeless – Unanimously Approved

The Committee for Social Affairs, Health, and Integration unanimously decided to secure street social work for homeless people in Bergedorf. The district council recommended to the social affairs department to establish the necessary budget funds and to initiate a tender process as soon as possible.

Another important project was the establishment of the Inclusion Advisory Board, which has already held three meetings and is committed to better participation of people with disabilities. The board now also has a rules of procedure and plans to be more actively involved in political decision-making processes in the future.

Culture and Remembrance Work

Information Plaque for the KörberHaus – Finally on the Way

After long discussions and several proposals, the Cultural Committee decided to install an information plaque for the namesake of the KörberHaus, Kurt A. Körber. The plaque will be placed in front of the bridge leading to the main entrance of the KörberHaus and will contain information about Körber's life's work, including his past membership in the NSDAP. The district administration is required to submit a report on the implementation by the end of April 2026.

In addition, a QR code for the plaque was approved, which will link to further information and digital materials. The content has already been discussed in the Main Committee, and the plaque will finally be realized.

Further Developments and Topics

Youth Welfare Committee Demands More Funds for Youth Work

The Youth Welfare Committee unanimously decided to address the underfunding of Open Youth Work (OKJA) in Bergedorf and to forward a resolution to the district council. The allocated funds for 2026 increased to 4,609,000 euros, representing an increase of 144,000 euros compared to 2025.

Environment and Climate Protection: Playground Funding and Green Spaces

The Committee for Environment and Climate Protection approved the renovation of the soccer goals at the Lohbrügger Landstraße playground, to provide children with a safe and functional play option. In addition, the renaturalization of the Schulenbrooksbek was examined, provided resources are available.

Overview and Outlook

April 2026 was a month of major decisions and planning in Bergedorf. Whether in urban development, social security, or remembrance work – the district council and its committees set clear priorities. In the coming weeks, it will be particularly interesting to see how the Master Plan ideas can be implemented, which housing projects will be approved, and whether the information plaques can be installed on time by the end of the month.

Further steps are also expected in youth welfare and environmental efforts, particularly regarding the renovation of playgrounds and the assessment of green space projects.
