Bergedorf 2026: Urban Development and Construction Projects in January Focus
In January 2026, Bergedorf intensively engaged with forward-looking urban development projects. The Urban Development Committee and its subcommittees for construction matters discussed key initiatives such as the planning of a new primary school, the expansion of the integrated city center concept, and the progress of the Magistralen 2040 plus Master Plan.
Urban Development in Bergedorf: January 2026 in Focus
In January 2026, several central urban development topics were at the forefront in Bergedorf. With the planning of a new primary school, the Integrated City Center Concept, and the progress of the Magistralen 2040 plus Master Plan, the city demonstrated an intense process of spatial and social transformation. These projects not only reflect the current priorities of urban development but also the long-term objectives of the district administration and senior municipal authorities.
Primary School in the Garten-Quartier: A Milestone for Education and Urban Planning
The planning of a new four-and-a-half-stream primary school in the Garten-Quartier in Oberbillwerder is a central project that was highlighted in January 2026. The school will be built on a 15,000 m² site and will cover a total building area of approximately 7,200 m². In addition to classrooms and administrative areas, the school will also include a sports hall and a cafeteria. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the school is planned as an "Active City Model School" – a pilot project for sustainable and engaging educational environments.
The project is part of a realization competition to be announced in 2026. The process is complex: following a participation competition, a public procurement procedure (VgV) will be conducted. Construction is planned to begin in 2030, with completion scheduled for 2032. With an investment volume of 32.5 million euros, the school is a significant construction project that combines pedagogical and urban planning innovations.
Integrated City Center Concept: Reetwerder as a Vibrant Neighborhood
The Reetwerder area is another project discussed in the Urban Development Committee in January 2026. The goal of the Integrated City Center Concept is to enhance the public space between Bergedorf and Lohbrügge in terms of functionality and design. Measures such as uniform paving, partial de-sealing of surfaces, additional greening, new furniture, and a reduction in car parking spaces are central to this initiative.
A key point is the creation of recreational and service areas, especially through the reorganization of the street corner in Reetwerder. At the same time, the bicycle routes 8 and 9 will be better connected to improve cycling access. A survey of residents and participation events will be conducted to incorporate public opinion.
The project team is cooperating with the Department for Urban Development and Housing and is part of the RISE-funded area "Zentrum Bergedorf." The focus is on sustainability, barrier-free accessibility, and the activation of vacant buildings. Lighting will be optimized, and charging zones and cargo bike parking spaces will be created.
Master Plan Magistralen 2040 plus: The Future of the B5 in Bergedorf
The planning of the B5 within the framework of the Magistralen 2040 plus Master Plan is another focus of the January meetings. The B5 is part of the model area "Zentrum Bergedorf" and is being processed jointly with the Department for Urban Development and Housing (BSW) and the Department for Transport and Mobility Transition (BVM). The goal is to define strategic measures for the future use and design of the main road.
In January 2026, initial proposals and status analyses were presented, and the schedule for the next steps was established. Results are planned for the first quarter of 2026, with a presentation in the Urban Development Committee scheduled for April 2026. A final workshop is planned for April or May 2026. The specific measures depend on the results of the model area processing and are financially dependent on RISE funding and possible co-funding.
Outlook: Bergedorf as a Model City for Sustainable Urban Development
The January sessions show that Bergedorf is actively committed to forward-looking urban development. With the planning of the new primary school, the Integrated City Center Concept, and the Magistralen 2040 plus Master Plan, the city is focusing on innovation, sustainability, and citizen participation. These projects combine social, ecological, and economic aspects and contribute to making Bergedorf a livable and efficient city.
