Urban Development in Hohen Neuendorf: March 2026 in Focus

In March 2026, Hohen Neuendorf faced important decisions on its urban development strategy in the Urban Development and Construction Committee. A key issue was the road construction project in the Friedrich-Naumann-Straße, involving compromises between costs, the environment, and traffic safety.

Road Construction and Compromises: The Friedrich-Naumann-Straße in Hohen Neuendorf

In March 2026, the central meeting of the Urban Development and Construction Committee in Hohen Neuendorf took place, during which several topics on urban development and infrastructure were discussed and decided. The focus was on the construction project in the Friedrich-Naumann-Straße between Platanenallee and Hermsdorfer Straße. With a vote of 8 in favor, 0 against, and 3 abstentions, variant 2a, a dead-end solution without through traffic, was preferred, with cost savings of around 35,000 euros.

The street was developed as a residential street in 2011 without stormwater drainage, which was later supplemented by gutters over the years. The current project aims to ensure the access to lower-lying properties, with estimated costs for property owners at 8.50 euros per square meter of usable area.

The Cost Issue: Variant 1 vs. Variant 2a

The discussion between the two planning variants reflected fundamental tensions in urban planning. Variant 1, a continuous street as a "false one-way street," would have cost 250,000 euros. It was considered safer for cyclists and pedestrians and would have allowed for better waste disposal and higher fire department accessibility.

Variant 2a, on the other hand, with costs of 215,000 euros, was preferred as the more cost-effective and environmentally friendly option. Critics argued that the dead-end solution could lead to traffic problems in the long term, especially due to the endangered cycling traffic and limited accessibility. The decision was ultimately political, with a clear recommendation for the more environmentally friendly and cheaper solution.

Traffic Infrastructure and Public Transport: Challenges and Solutions

Another central topic was the improvement of public transport (PT) infrastructure. Discussions regarding increasing the frequency of bus line 809 and adjusting schedules due to delays in the S-Bahn lines (S1, S8) highlighted the challenges in traffic planning.

Furthermore, the situation of the underpass in the Karl-Marx-Straße was addressed. Due to weather conditions and frost, the completion is delayed, with motor vehicle traffic given priority over cycling traffic. The project was originally planned for mid-year. Criticism regarding the long construction time and the lack of communication with citizens became apparent.

Cycling Infrastructure: Safety and Connectivity

The bicycle parking facility at Müllheimer Platz was also in focus. Discussions centered on accessibility, safety, and connectivity to road traffic. Proposals for lowering kerbs, introducing 20 km/h zones, and placing pedestrian signals were discussed. Critics pointed out the poor visibility of Müllheimer Platz and called for better consideration of people with disabilities.

Conclusion: A City in Transition

The March meeting of the Urban Development and Construction Committee in Hohen Neuendorf showed that the city is undergoing an intensive process of transformation and modernization. Decisions on road construction, public transport, and cycling are not only technical, but also political and societal challenges. The preferred variant 2a in the Friedrich-Naumann-Straße underlines the city's will to save costs and protect the environment, even if this involves compromises.

In the future, it is expected that Hohen Neuendorf will continue to strive for a balance between traffic safety, cost control, and sustainability. Communication with citizens and investors, as well as transparency in construction planning, must remain central elements.
