April 2026: Urban Development, Culture, and Social Innovation in Frankfurt (Oder)
April 2026 brought a range of decisions and developments in Frankfurt (Oder) that will shape the city's future: from renewable energy and cultural projects to social initiatives and youth support. An overview.
Urban Development and Climate Protection in Focus
April 2026 was marked by significant decisions in the areas of urban development and climate protection. The Committee for Urban Development, Transport, Environment, and Climate Protection passed several landmark resolutions. Among these was the repeal of the advertising ordinance for the city center, which allows the city to reposition its urban identity. Equally important was the approval of a site-specific zoning plan VBP-23-001 for the construction of a pyrolysis plant by Novocarbo in collaboration with Frankfurt (Oder) Stadtwerke. This facility is expected to cover about 8% of the city’s heating demand in a climate-neutral manner starting in 2029 and is part of the city’s climate protection strategy.
Another highlight was the Third Amendment to the Zoning Plan BP-02-002 "Bahnhofsberg", which enables the realization of the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art (BLMK). The scope of application was adjusted to ensure the museum's use.
Culture and Education: Jubilee and Future
The Committee for Culture, Education, Sports, and Citizen Participation laid the groundwork for the 775th anniversary of the city's founding in 2028. A broad event program is planned, led by a multimedia exhibition in the Marienkirche and a large city festival. The light mapping on the Oder Promenade and in historic buildings will also be part of the celebrations.
Another important event was the appointment of Felix Mildenberger as the new General Music Director of the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt (BSOF). He will also lead the Education Project starting with the 2026/27 season, strengthening cultural education in the city. The Theater and Orchestra Framework Agreement will expire at the end of 2026 and is being renegotiated, indicating long-term planning.
Social Development and Youth Support
The Youth Welfare Committee focused intensively on the future of daycare facilities. It was decided to evaluate the spatial conditions in daycare centers from a quality perspective by the end of 2025 and, if necessary, reduce capacities. Furthermore, it was decided that the daycare center "Hans and Hanka" and the after-school program "Coole Kiste" will be supported as Kiez-Kitas starting from 01.08.2026.
The Child Protection Clinic, to be established at the Frankfurt (Oder) Clinic, also came into focus. The Youth Welfare Committee also criticized data protection risks in the transfer of data from daycare to school without parental notification and called for stronger child protection structures.
Citizen Participation and Local Politics
Social policy issues were also at the forefront in the Committee for Equality, Health, Social Affairs, and Integration. The Senior Council presented its 2026 priorities, including the opening of the 33rd Brandenburg Senior Week in Frankfurt (Oder). Discussions also focused on how to better support vulnerable groups such as single parents or children in need of care.
In local councils such as Booßen, Markendorf, Lichtenberg, Lossow, Hohenwalde, and Kliestow, topics such as village festivals, wind energy projects, village development, and citizen participation were discussed. Particularly noteworthy were the citizen consultation hours held in Kliestow, which addressed the planning of single-family homes on the Wendischen Weg.
Overview: Key Developments in April 2026
- Climate Protection: The pyrolysis plant will cover the city’s heating demand in a climate-neutral manner.
- 2028 Jubilee Program: Preparations for the 775th anniversary of the city’s founding are in full swing.
- Youth Welfare: New funding for daycare centers and a stronger focus on child protection.
- Citizen Participation: Active involvement of residents in local planning processes.

Outlook
The developments in April demonstrate that Frankfurt (Oder) remains active not only in urban and climate policy but also in advancing social and cultural innovations. The planning for the 2028 anniversary, the expansion of renewable energy, and the strengthening of youth welfare are just a few examples of how the city is actively shaping its future. In the coming months, the focus will be on the implementation of the approved projects and the inclusion of citizens—because urban development is only possible together.
