Regensburg's School Development in Focus: Renovation of the Realschule am Judenstein and Mobile Educational Offers
In February 2026, significant decisions in the field of education were made in Regensburg. The Education Committee passed a resolution on the comprehensive renovation of the Realschule am Judenstein and a report request on mobile educational offers. These developments reflect the current challenge of adapting educational institutions to growing student numbers and modern requirements.
Education in Motion: Regensburg Invests in School Development
The city of Regensburg has demonstrated active engagement in education in February 2026. Two central topics were at the forefront: the comprehensive renovation of the Realschule am Judenstein and the development of mobile educational offers. Both initiatives reflect a long-term approach to making educational institutions reliable, inclusive, and future-ready learning environments.
Comprehensive Renovation of the Realschule am Judenstein: A Milestone for Education and Infrastructure
The Realschule am Judenstein is a central educational hub in Regensburg. With approximately 600 students in 24 classes, it is already at its capacity limit. Long-term plans foresee an increase to 27 classes (approximately 700 students). At the same time, the building complex is in urgent need of renovation: five construction units of different ages and renovation statuses make up the current situation.
On February 12, 2026, the Education Committee passed the resolution on the comprehensive renovation and expansion of the school in a public meeting. The decision was made unanimously. The renovation includes the vacant southern wing and the southern part of the eastern wing, the former Kreuzschule. A central aspect is the integration of the building at "Nonnenplatz 8" into school operations.
The planning includes a comprehensive energy-efficient and barrier-free modernization: timber construction, photovoltaic systems, heat pumps, and energy-efficient technology are part of the renovation concept. In addition, the schoolyard will be greened, de-sealed, and freed from traffic, creating a climate-adapted, multifunctional open space.
Another important goal is to relocate the after-school program back onto the school grounds. The after-school program will be equipped with a canteen, learning rooms, and direct access to outdoor space. The small sports halls will be converted into a theater space and a multifunctional room – physical education classes will continue at the Clermont-Ferrand Middle School.
Mobile Educational Offers as a Response to Spatial and Societal Challenges
In parallel to the school renovation, the Education Committee addressed a report request from the city council faction Bündnis 90/Die Grünen on mobile educational offers. The motion, submitted on January 20, 2026, was also passed unanimously.
Mobile educational offers are a response to spatial and socio-economic barriers in the education system. They enable learners who, due to their place of residence, financial situation, or health limitations, cannot attend traditional educational institutions to still gain access to high-quality education. In Regensburg, such offers are to be expanded – particularly in the form of digital learning modules, mobile teaching groups, and cooperative partnerships with extracurricular educational institutions.
The lead responsibility lies with the Department of Further Education, with Dr. Kellner-Mayrhofer acting as rapporteur. The report is expected to be available by mid-2026 and will then be discussed politically.
Education Policy as a Long-Term Investment in the Future
The decisions in February 2026 show how Regensburg understands education as a central building block for the city's future. The renovation of the Realschule am Judenstein is a key investment in physical infrastructure, while mobile educational offers are an investment in flexibility, inclusion, and accessibility.
The challenge is to link both: modern learning spaces with modern learning models. With these two measures, the city has set a milestone that can pave the way for future educational developments in Regensburg.
Outlook: Education 2030 and Beyond
In the coming years, it will be crucial to evaluate the results of the comprehensive renovation and the mobile educational initiatives and adjust them as necessary. Close cooperation between schools, parents, teachers, and the administration will be essential.
In the long term, Regensburg could become a model for sustainable and inclusive educational development – not only in the regional, but also in the wider context. This will also involve ongoing debates and decisions at the political level to define the direction.
