Ingolstadt Aims for More Structure in Sports Promotion and Event Planning in February 2026

In February 2026, Ingolstadt focused intensively on the future of sports promotion and event organization. The Committee for Sports, Events, and Leisure made important decisions that will have a long-term impact on the cityscape and its residents.

Sports Promotion Award: New Guidelines for More Transparency and Structure

In February 2026, Ingolstadt provided important impulses toward a more structured approach to sports promotion. The Committee for Sports, Events, and Leisure approved changes to the guidelines for the awarding of the Sports Promotion Prize. In the future, the prize will be awarded every two years in odd-numbered years – the next prize is planned for 2027.

The Sports Promotion Prize is endowed with 5,000 euros and can be awarded to both individuals and teams. For individuals, there is an age limit of 35 years, and they must either have been born in Ingolstadt, reside there, or have their main sporting activities in the city. Nominations can be submitted by April 30 each year, with self-nominations not being permitted.

The selection is carried out by a secret ballot of a selection committee consisting of members of the Committee for Sports, Events, and Leisure, the Sports Commission, and the head of the Department for Sports and Leisure. An absolute majority is required to forward a nomination to the City Council, which will then decide on the award in a closed session.

These new regulations aim to promote greater transparency, fairness, and sustainability in sports promotion.

Events: Christmas Market and „Festival of Cultures“ in Focus

In addition to sports promotion, the planning and funding of major city events were also at the center of discussion. The Christmas Market will start earlier from 2026 – on the Friday before All Souls' Day – and will take place over five instead of four weekends in the future. This earlier start is intended to compensate for economic losses resulting from the market's shortened duration, which was necessary for security reasons. In addition, the pitch fee will be increased to cover additional costs of around 9,500 euros for security measures and personnel.

The „Festival of Cultures“ will also be restructured. From 2026, a participant fee will be introduced to finance infrastructure costs such as electricity and water. Associations will now be required to pay a basic fee – between 80 and 120 euros depending on the model – as well as flat-rate electricity and water charges. A reduced rate applies to aid organizations and the Migration Council. The Sports Commission approved these changes to ensure the long-term financial viability of the event.

Impacts and Future Perspectives

The decisions made in February 2026 show a clear willingness on the part of the city of Ingolstadt to create more structure and sustainability both in sports promotion and event planning. The introduction of a two-year cycle for the Sports Promotion Prize strengthens the long-term planning ability of sports clubs and individual athletes. At the same time, the extension of the Christmas Market and the introduction of participant fees for cultural events provide better economic security for these important city offerings.

In the future, it will be important to see whether these measures actually lead to sustainable development – both in terms of the financial impact on associations and with regard to the quality and attractiveness of the events. The city has set a clear course with these decisions, which must now be consistently pursued.
