Bamberger April 2026 – What Has Been Moving in the City

In April 2026, Bamberg addressed several key topics: from the planning of the deep sewer collector to financial planning and social projects. Here is our monthly review.

From Deep Sewer Collectors to the Music School – Bamberg Keeps Moving Forward

What Was Important This Month

  • The City Council approved the design planning for the Bamberg Deep Sewer Collector with a total budget of nearly 92 million euros.
  • The 2025 Annual Accounts of the city and the managed foundations were unanimously passed.
  • The repurposing of Ludwigstraße 14–16 into a bike parking facility was supported, which could improve the cityscape and mobility.
  • Partner classes at Luitpoldschule will be accepted under financial guidelines, enabling new educational models.
  • The Music School received a reduction of its deficit, but must now develop a deficit reduction concept.

The Deep Sewer Collector: A Focus in Sewer Construction

The Deep Sewer Collector is a central project to ensure the long-term sewage disposal in Bamberg. With a total budget of 92 million euros (66.7 million euros for the first construction phase, 25.3 million euros for the second), the city is now moving into concrete planning.

The city has established an interdisciplinary project team to coordinate the planning and implementation. At the same time, an integrated communication strategy is being developed to actively involve the public in the process. This will be regularly presented to the City Council to ensure transparency and build trust.

In addition, the drainage ordinance is being reviewed to implement the legal requirements of § 55 Abs. 2 WHG (Water Resources Act) in practice. This is especially important for new and renovation projects to ensure local rainwater management.

Financial Course Set: 2025 Annual Accounts and Foundation Management

In April 2026, the 2025 Annual Accounts of the city of Bamberg were unanimously approved. The budget surplus was distributed among various reserves, including 214,000 euros into the parking space buyout reserve and 472,000 euros into the budget balance reserve.

In addition, the Finance Committee approved withdrawals from reserves amounting to 1.5 million euros to reduce or cancel loans. Particularly noteworthy is the 50% reduction in the deficit of the city's music school, which offers hope for a new concept.

The annual accounts of the foundations were submitted to the Audit Office for review. The city has committed to reviewing the audit results and taking appropriate measures if necessary.

Social Projects and Mobility in the Focus

The city also advanced several social and infrastructure projects. The conversion of the property at Ludwigstraße 14–16 into a bike parking facility was decided, which will further promote sustainability and mobility in the city center.

In addition, the admission of partner classes at Luitpoldschule under financial guidelines was approved. The city receives a one-time cost reimbursement and covers a share of the operating costs. This enables new educational models and strengthens inclusion in the school.

Trends and Contexts: Financial Consolidation and Citizen Participation

It is becoming increasingly clear that Bamberg is taking a strategically cautious approach in both financial and social matters. Financial consolidation, deficit reduction in institutions such as the music school, and citizen participation in large projects such as the deep sewer collector are central priorities, showing how the city intends to meet future challenges.

At the same time, Bamberg remains at a high level of administrative transparency – not least due to the unanimous decisions in almost all votes in the City Council. This underlines the coherence of political work and the trust base between the administration and political bodies.

Conclusion and Outlook

April 2026 was marked in Bamberg by clear decisions, financial discipline, and social responsibility. Large projects such as the deep sewer collector and the repurposing of city-owned properties show how the city is building for the future. Citizen participation and transparency in financial planning will remain central values shaping Bamberg.

In May, it will become clear whether the planning for the deep sewer collector can smoothly transition into implementation and whether the deficit concepts for the music school and other institutions can create the necessary stability. Sustainability and social integration will remain key topics.
