Sport Infrastructure in Tübingen: Investments and Innovations in April 2026
Tübingen is making major investments in its sports infrastructure. In April 2026, important decisions were made regarding the renovation of the Uhlandstraße Sports Hall and the renewal of the Hechinger Eck Gymnasium. These projects demonstrate how the city is shaping its sporting future – with modern technology, climate protection, and partners such as the Zirkus Zambaioni.
Renovation and Renewal: Tübingen Modernizes Its Sports Facilities
In April 2026, Tübingen focused on significant decisions regarding the modernization of its municipal sports infrastructure. With the renovation of the Uhlandstraße Sports Hall and the redevelopment of the Hechinger Eck Gymnasium, the city is not only improving conditions for sports clubs and schools but also emphasizing climate protection, energy efficiency, and partnerships with local associations. Both projects are part of a long-term strategy to sustainably secure and expand sports offerings in the region.
Renovation of the Uhlandstraße Sports Hall: Modernization for the Future
The Uhlandstraße Sports Hall, a central sports facility in Tübingen, was at the center of a comprehensive renovation plan in April 2026. The planning decision was unanimously adopted (Proposal 71/2026), paving the way for a full renovation and partial new construction. Key aspects included the renewal of technical systems (heating, ventilation, electrical, lighting), the replacement of the shed roof structure with a new flat roof, and the installation of a large photovoltaic system for self-consumption.
The construction costs for the variant with the G9 extension (Variant 1b) amount to approximately 12.95 million euros. The construction period is planned to last 22–24 months, meaning the hall will likely shine in its new form by 2028. Another driver for the expansion was the reintroduction of the G9 system in the 2025/26 school year, which required additional space. These will be integrated through the construction above the underground garage.
Financially, the project is also well-positioned: The city has utilized funding programs such as the federal Renovation of Municipal Sports Facilities (SKS) program and the KfW funding for efficient buildings 70. The requested KfW funding amounts to up to 857,500 euros, and state funds are planned at up to 420,000 euros. These investments help ensure the hall is not only technically, but also financially sustainable.
Hechinger Eck Gymnasium: A Project with Partnership and Vision
The Hechinger Eck Gymnasium will shine in a new light. The city has approved the purchase agreement with the GWG for a refined shell building at a cost of 2,701,000 euros. Additional sports-specific construction work costs 1,611,000 euros, making the city's share of the total cost 4,312,000 euros. A funding application for 420,000 euros was already submitted to the Regional Council in December 2025.
But the project is not solely funded by the city: the Zirkus Zambaioni e.V. is a key partner. The association contributes 315,000 euros to the construction costs of the single-court hall and receives a 20-year usage right in return. In addition, the city supports the association with a grant of approximately 144,000 euros according to the sports funding guidelines. The hall itself is planned with modern equipment: ventilation with heat recovery, LED lighting, built-in sports equipment, and energy-efficient heating via ceiling panels. The building's energy standard corresponds to KfW 40, highlighting that sustainability is a central aspect.
The hall is part of a five-story building with a total net area of 3,040 square meters. In addition to the hall itself, association rooms for Zirkus Zambaioni will be created, covering 422 square meters. These rooms are intended for training, changing rooms, meetings, offices, and storage. Funding for the association rooms is planned at 2.4 million euros, with 85 percent already secured. This includes public grants, own funds, loans, and donations from several foundations, including the Software AG Foundation, the Bürgerstiftung Tübingen, and the Elisabethstiftung Rottenburg.
Outlook: Sports for All – With Innovation and Partnership
Tübingen is demonstrating with these projects how urban sports policy could look in the future. The renovation of the Uhlandstraße Sports Hall and the redevelopment of the Hechinger Eck Gymnasium are examples of modern, sustainable, and participatory planning. The cooperation with associations like Zirkus Zambaioni shows how sports facilities can be used not only for schools and clubs, but also for cultural and creative disciplines.
These investments help strengthen the sports infrastructure in Tübingen while also advancing climate protection. With energy-efficient buildings, renewable energy, and long-term usage models, the city not only meets current needs but also secures the future of sports and cultural offerings in the region.
