Harrislee – Monthly Review February 2026

Harrislee – Monthly Review February 2026

In February 2026, Harrislee made significant progress in the areas of climate protection, infrastructure, and sustainability. The municipal heat plan, the construction of a new swimming hall, and the expansion of a fruit orchard marked the central developments.

Environment, Climate, and Future Security in the Spotlight

Heat Plan and Decentralized Solutions

The Committee for Environment and Sustainability took a decisive step toward climate protection: The Final Report on Municipal Heating and Cooling Planning was presented. It shows that 82% of buildings are already connected to the district heating network. For the remaining areas, decentralized solutions will be implemented. This plan will be submitted to the Municipal Council for approval on March 19, 2026.

This decision marks a step toward climate-friendly urban development and demonstrates how Harrislee is advancing the energy transition. Citizens can rely on a clear energy policy that is both ecologically and economically sound.

Scattered Fruit Orchards and Nature Experience Areas

Another positive signal for local nature came from the Committee for Environment and Sustainability: The expansion of scattered fruit orchards in Berghofstraße was supported. These areas not only contribute to biodiversity, but also to the strengthening of local identity and agricultural maintenance.

In addition, the decision to establish the nature experience area "Pflückwald" was passed. The planning firm GR ZWO from Flensburg has been commissioned to prepare the draft plan. The area will be gradually integrated into the land use plan and will in the future provide a valuable leisure area for families and nature enthusiasts.

Food Sharing and Sustainability Goals

Harrislee is also actively involved in the area of food waste. Within the Foodsharing project, presented by Detlef Stehl, surplus food in the community is redistributed. Niels Bruhn is the local contact person and coordinates the project.

In addition, a support group for the implementation of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals was established. This group will be subordinate to the Committee for Environment and Sustainability and will regularly report to the Main Committee. This shows how deeply sustainability is embedded in the municipal decision-making process.

Swimming Hall and Sanitation New Construction: Future Security of Infrastructure

New Construction of the Swimming Hall

The Main Committee approved the draft for the new construction of the swimming hall. The total cost amounts to 20.1 million euros, of which 18.9 million euros are eligible for funding. The city will cover 6.3 million euros as its own contribution.

The new construction is a central project for the future viability of the sports and health infrastructure in Harrislee. It not only offers a modern swimming area, but also a new sauna and wellness area, which will be taken into account in further planning.

Further Infrastructure Developments

The Building Committee also approved the preliminary draft of the zoning plan 58 "New Swimming Pool". The plan was adopted in an accelerated process without an environmental review. This allows the construction process to be advanced quickly.

In addition, a hygiene concept of the municipal fire department was unanimously approved. Municipal Fire Chief Tim Borchardt presented the concept and answered questions. This underlines the community's willingness to act modern and transparently, even in critical areas such as fire protection infrastructure.

Social and Cultural Impulses

Support for Culture and Associations

The Main Committee decided to support Lütte Kummedie Harrislee e.V. with up to 20,000 euros per year for stage equipment. A condition is a waiver statement and the mention of the funding in public relations. This shows how Harrislee actively supports local cultural projects and strengthens cultural everyday life.

Association Center and Municipal Fire Department

The SPD faction's proposal to rename the building at Grenzstraße 8 to "Vereinstreff" was submitted for further discussion. The name should bring the central hub for association activities more into the focus.

In addition, it was decided to fully cover the membership fees of the municipal fire department from 2027 onwards. This is an important step to secure the voluntary fire protection in Harrislee.

Overall Assessment and Outlook

February 2026 has shown that Harrislee has made concrete and sustainable decisions in several areas. From the energy transition via the new swimming hall construction to the strengthening of local associations – the municipality shows that it acts in a future-oriented and citizen-friendly way.

Further important dates are scheduled for March: The final report on the heating planning will be discussed in the municipal council, and the working group for budget consolidation will begin its work.
