Youth Policy in Pirna: Focus on Support, Debates, and Democratic Education
In March 2026, the city of Pirna focused on the support of youth and children's work. A total of 36,372 euros in grants were approved, with political education, integration, and cultural offerings at the center. At the same time, there were heated debates about the distribution of the funds.
Pirna's Youth Support: A Mirror of Social Debates
Support for youth and children's work in Pirna is not only a question of resource allocation but also a reflection of societal values, priorities, and debates. In March 2026, decisions about the financial support of youth projects were in the spotlight. The city invested a total of 36,372 euros in a wide range of initiatives that shape the everyday lives of young people in Pirna – from religious events to youth migration work.
The Distribution of Funds: An Overview
The grants are distributed among a total of 13 projects from eight different organizations. Particularly noteworthy is the strong support for Hanno e.V., which alone receives almost 15,410 euros. This amount is used for events such as the children's festival, youth protection throughout the district, and the creative action "Beats & Paint." Other significant recipients are the Youth Association Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge with 1,800 euros and the Catholic Parish of St. Heinrich and Kunigunde, which receives a total of 1,870 euros for religious and pastoral youth activities.
The city of Pirna relies on a broad range of offers that have an integrative character (e.g., youth migration service) as well as culturally-social (e.g., creative association) or democratically-pedagogical (e.g., action for civil courage) objectives. The funding comes from budget item 36211/Youth Work and is subject to the city's funding guidelines, which have been in effect since June 2024.
Political Debates on Funding
The decision on the distribution of funds, however, was not without conflicts. In particular, the role of the Action for Civil Courage e.V. sparked controversial discussions. The AfD and Freie Wähler factions submitted an amendment to cut the funds for the Action for Civil Courage and instead use them for "practical" youth activities such as inline skating, archery, or photography. This amendment was ultimately rejected with 12 votes against it, which resulted in the projects of the Action for Civil Courage being removed from the funding list.
The city administration emphasized during the debate that political education projects are investments in the future, especially in view of right-wing extremist incidents in the region. An equal and professionally justified funding is central to overcoming societal divisions. At the same time, it was critically noted that many full-day offers in schools are restricted due to funding cuts – a topic that is likely to be further discussed in the future.
Outlook: What's Next?
The decisions from March 2026 show that Pirna is consciously balancing in youth support: between cultural diversity, social integration, and democratic education. Although the Action for Civil Courage was removed from funding, the city remains present in democratic education – through projects such as "The Transparent City" or the youth migration service.
In the future, it will be important to stabilize the financial resources for youth offers, especially in view of the cuts in full-day care. At the same time, debates on the prioritization of projects should be made more transparent and citizen-oriented – for example, through public participation events or youth participation platforms.
Conclusion: A City in Dialogue with Its Youth
The support of youth and children's work in Pirna is not only a financial decision but a process of societal negotiation. The debates about the distribution of funds show how strongly youth policy in the city is shaped by political values and social challenges. If Pirna wants to maintain its role as a lively and democratic place to live for young people in the coming years, it must not only continue but intensify this dialogue.
