Sport in Leipzig: Streetball, Swimming Courses, and Cultural Offerings in March 2026
In March 2026, Leipzig is setting new impulses in the field of sport and movement. In addition to planning a small streetball court at Mockauer Platz and expanding swimming courses, the city is also promoting cultural mobility. An overview.
Movement for All: Sports Policy in Leipzig in March 2026
In a city like Leipzig, which sees itself as a blend of industrial past and creative future focus, sport plays a central role. Movement not only promotes health, but also strengthens social bonds and creates new spaces for young people. In March 2026, the city is setting impulses for more mobility for all through several initiatives – from streetball to swimming sports and cultural projects.
Streetball at Mockauer Platz: A New Hub for Youth
A small streetball court at Mockauer Platz is part of a strategic effort to offer young people in the city center more opportunities for physical activity and leisure. The court, measuring 10 × 10 meters and expanded with a safety area and fencing to a total of 12 × 12 meters, is designed for 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 games. The proposal was developed in close collaboration with local outreach workers who are well acquainted with the neighborhood.
The facility aims not only to create an attraction for youth but also to support preventive social work. Conflicts over use are to be avoided through time-controlled access and automatic light shut-off in the evening. The location, situated in a traffic-intensive area, is already heavily used due to noise – so additional noise from streetball games is expected to be less disruptive.
The city is also considering anchoring the project within the framework of the Stadtplatzprogramm (City Square Program), which could secure the facility's long-term stability and visibility.
Swimming Courses: Inclusive Offers for All Age Groups
In addition to promoting ball sports, swimming remains a key focus of Leipzig's sports policy. Particularly in the swimming pools at Rabet and in the Schwimmhalle Nordost, children and young people find structured course offerings. The mandatory school swimming lessons in the second grade are supplemented by additional courses in the fall.
In September 2026, the opening of another course at the Rabet swimming pool is expected. The course conditions remain relatively inclusive: 12 lessons for up to 12 children, 125 euros regular price, 105 euros discounted. Discounts through the Teilhabepaket (Participation Package) and the Leipzig-Pass enable access for socially disadvantaged families.
Demand is high: the pool areas are almost fully booked. Sports clubs such as the Postschwimmverein Leipzig e.V. and LOK Mitte complement the municipal offerings with further swimming training.
Cultural Mobility: From Defibrillator to LinceDance-Box
In addition to classic sports offerings, Leipzig also promotes cultural mobility. In March 2026, several creative projects were launched to revitalize the urban space. For example, a project proposal for a music box for the LinceDance group, known in the region for its dance culture.
In addition, the initiative "Wasserfest Thekla 2026" is part of a broader cultural program along the Elbe River, which combines sport, music, and nature. Not least, a defibrillator is being purchased – another step toward safety in recreational and sports spaces.
Outlook: Sport as a Central Element for Social and Physical Mobility
The developments in March 2026 show how Leipzig sees sport as more than just physical exercise. Streetball, swimming courses, and cultural projects contribute to creating opportunities for movement and leisure for all population groups – and that in an inclusive, social, and creative framework. The city is moving – and wants its citizens to move too.
